Hedgewood School wanted their pupils to be able to enjoy their playground space throughout the year and during some lessons too. To allow the school to use this space, it was decided to add a large canopy to the area. A&S Landscape was brought on board to design, manufacture and install the fabric structure.
To match the school’s branding, the steelwork was finished in a Moss Green colour and the fabric in Sky Blue. Waterproof material was used which meant the shelter would provide all-year-round protection, come rain or shine. Thanks to the clever tepee design, only four uprights were used in the structure, meaning more useable space was created. The school also choose to add post pad protectors the shelter, for an extra layer of safety and security.
Once the drawings were signed off, our expert installation team efficiently installed the tepee at the school during the summer holidays. This meant that when the school reopened for the new term, the outside space could be used straight away. The newly created space will also help the school in keeping their staff and pupils safe during coronavirus, as the area can be used during lessons, playtimes and lunch too.
The Royal Borough of Greenwich, south east London, is home to Shooters Hill Sixth Form College, a co-educational establishment offering further education to young people from the local community and beyond.
With underutilised space in the campus grounds and an ever-flowing traffic of students, they wanted to add an outdoor space that would provide students with a meeting point, whatever the weather. With a footprint coverage to work with of 15 metres x 5 metres, they wanted to create a standing canopy with dependable rain shelter and sun shade.
With help from the A&S Landscape team, they chose a Maxima Tepee™ as their base design. By grouping together a structure of three, a modular effect was achieved to cover the area designated for this free-standing canopy installation. This tensile canopy system utilises a heavy-duty fabric offering waterproof coverage and UV protection. To pick up on the black frames of the windows in the building behind the canopy location, the installation was finished in Jet Black (RAL 9005) steelwork and brightly coloured fabric in Turquoise Green (RAL 6016). These colours, which are available along with a variety of others in our colour range, add to the overall design of the structure.
Their outdoor facilities are particularly impressive. With faux grass, they have installed all-weather areas, including sandpits, play frame equipment and a wonderful tiered water play area.
All these wonderful spaces needed to have some shade from the sunshine so that they could be enjoyed all year round. This is where A&S Landscape came on board. We added five rectangular shade cloth sails over the water play area as well as two sails over the play area and sandpit area. All the sails were installed in matching Turquoise fabric to bring the areas together. The end result is a striking design.
So impressive was the end result, that the whole school was shortlisted for an architectural award. The most important customers, the children themselves, are very happy with their outside space. Enjoying the area even on the sunniest days of the year. A&S Landscape has more than 40 years’ experience in transforming outdoor areas for schools and other commercial buildings. If you need some inspiration for your own project please review our gallery which has hundreds of pictures of our work.
Working for a business partner our team erected a tensile fabric roof Tepee in Bexleyheath Academy Woolwich Rd, Bexleyheath, Greater London. The full contract involved the supply and fitting of one Maxima™ Tepee tensile waterproof fabric roof structure measuring 7000mm X 7000mm.
So when Sheringham Primary School contacted A&S Landscape, looking for just such an addition, we had exactly the canopy in mind.
Outside one of the classrooms at Sheringham Primary School, we installed this small but very effective Motiva Linear to a size of 4500mm x 2500mm in slate grey steelwork (RAL 7015) with opal roofing. The result is that we now have shelter at Sheringham Primary School.
Not only that but the opal roofing helps with temperature control, blocking the sun from shining directly into the classroom. Sheringham Primary School has a flexible outdoor space that will last them for many, many years. When considering an outdoor playground canopy, you don’t need to be looking at something huge. It might be that all you really need is a small but effective outdoor classroom extension canopy that will give you the additional space you need to carry out lessons that were otherwise weather dependant.

Working alongside a business partner our engineers designed a sail structure for Morningside Primary School Hackney, London. The job involved one 5000mm X 5000mm Maxima™ tensile shade cloth fabric sail structure comprising of one square sail on four uprights including for all stainless steel fixtures and fittings.
However, playing outside, which offers even more benefits, from fresh air to natural light, is always at the mercy of the weather. And until Google builds us the remote control for rain clouds that we’ve been emailing them about we have to find a way around that. So when David Livingstone Academy got in touch looking to add an outdoor playground canopy we were more than happy to help.
Installing a Motiva Linear at 8000mm x 8000mm has transformed the space. Made from galvanised and polyester powder coated steel, this covered area will last for many years and the aluminium guttering, which is so much better than plastic, will also continue to work hard for a very long time.
The result is a canopy. Isn’t it? No. The result is play. Play that doesn’t have to wait for the sun to come out. Play that doesn’t have to be taken indoors at the first drop of rain. This is play that is always available, all year round and means it can become a healthy and consistent part of the curriculum.

A&S Landscape are well known in the canopy installation industry for their ability to provide flexible and high-quality shelter solutions. For this reason, high schools like The Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, Greenford, often reach out to us for help with projects large and small.
For The Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, the need for a canopy installation came about through a desire to alleviate pressure on their internal dining facilities. Their aim was to install shelter solutions across the campus. The A&S Landscape canopy solution came in the form of our Motiva Duo™ curved roof canopy. This fabulous canopy cover is a practical choice for a whole range of uses from dining area canopies, to covered walkways.
The overall project delivered four canopies providing an extensive amount of covered space. The end result provides The Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School’s pupils with a range of options during meal breaks. With each canopy finished in Jet Black (RAL 9005) steelwork with Opal polycarbonate roofing, the finished canopy installation is both smart and practical. Customisation doesn’t stop at colourways, either. The Motiva Duo™ can be tailored with a range of optional extras and can be configured to virtually any dimensions.
A&S Landscape installed a Motiva Linear canopy in Grey (RAL 7000) which looked very smart indeed. The roof was opal polycarbonate. Rainwater goods; gutters and downpipes are aluminium and were matched in the same grey colour. The rain is effectively managed meaning that the canopy will stand the test of time and visitors will stay nice and dry for many years to come.
As you approach the school entrance you are greeted by the new entrance canopy. It guides visitors to the doors as well as giving them shade and shelter from the weather. Waiting is no longer something that you need to do huddled against a building if it is raining. There is plenty of space and we think it looks really welcoming!
A&S Landscape has a wide range of products so they are sure to have something to meet your needs. Take a look at our gallery which contains more than 1500 images, it is a great place to get some inspiration for your project.
Our engineers made a straight polycarbonate roof canopy for Little Learners Day Nursery Purley, Croydon, London. The full contract involved the supply and installation of one Motiva™ monopitch straight pitched roof canopy measuring 12150mm X 3000mm and 10150mm x 3000mm and post protector pads.
Returning to the school for the third time in as many years, A&S Landscape were delighted to provide a covered walkway between the original school building and some new classrooms. The differing ground levels, existing building detail, a desire to keep uprights to a minimum a specific water outlet point presented a challenge that was neatly overcome with this bespoke design.
If you have a canopy requirement at your school or would just like to talk through the options, we would be pleased to help you. You can view many of our projects in our gallery or you can call us directly on 01743 444100. Alternatively, you can email any queries through to us on [email protected]. We are sure to have a canopy design that will exceed your expectations.
Two Motiva Cantilever canopies were added to create entrance canopies to two classroom doors into the playground area. They were finished with brightly coloured post pads.
A second style of canopy was the Maxima Sail, which was added to the raised grass area. This made a defined area under which the children can enjoy shade from the sunshine and perhaps some lessons or stories outside in the fresh air. A&S Landscape offers 16 colour options for our shade cloth fabric, which can be seen on our website.
The results are two-fold at Bedfont Primary. The children can now shelter as they make their way in and out of the classrooms. In addition, they can enjoy some shaded time under the Cherry Red Sail, meaning they are protected from the suns UV rays on the hotter days of the year. This is a lovely new space, with a definite purpose and a smart design which adds to the school playground. The striking Sail will shade the children for many years to come.
From Shade Sails, Umbrellas and Tepees, to straight or curved roof steel canopies, we have a range which is sure to offer you something special.
A straight roof Motiva Linear shelter was added to the campus, alongside one of the buildings. The Slate Grey steelwork creates a subtle, modern effect which works perfectly with the surrounding environment. The Opal polycarbonate roofing also provides essential protection against UV rays, while still allowing some sunlight through.
Everyone at The Mawney Foundation School is pleased with the new canopy and it has quickly become a very popular addition. During break times the pupils can play underneath the shelter without being exposed to the elements. Equipment can also be stored under the canopy too, saving the school valuable space. From fabric to multicoloured polycarbonate roof options, A&S Landscape offers a range of designs. It is not every day of the week we supply three completely different products from our range to the same school but in this case, we had the breadth of products that suited the Academy. When you’re in demand, you’re in demand.
Combining a Maxima Tepee, Maxima Fabric Sail structure and Motiva Linear we created different zones. A social seating area, giving the students a place to relax, sit down and spend some time together outside of classes; a dining zone, providing an additional space to eat and socialise outside the school; and a multi-purpose covered area, used in a variety of ways and giving additional outdoor space. The addition of side panels stops the wind driving through, meaning it is a relaxing and comfortable space whatever the weather.
Utilising the outdoors is so important for schools and if you have a large outdoor area that you’d like students to spend time in more often then it’s important to provide variety and offer spaces with different roles, mimicking the internal zones of the school but in an outdoor setting.
Outdoor playground canopies for schools are not just about providing shelter, they offer different types of space for different uses. Whether it is a social, dining or learning zone we have options that lend themselves to each. Take a look at our full range here and get in touch. Working with our design team is the best way to ensure you get exactly what you’re looking for.
Claremont High School already had a designated eating area, but it wasn’t covered. As you can imagine, this meant that it wasn’t available to students for large parts of the year thanks to the Great British Weather. A&S Landscape changed all this with the addition of a large canopy form our Motiva Duo range. The dining area canopy measured 23,236mm x 12,384mm, had opal roofing and steelwork in Marine Blue (RAL 5002).
The children had a new space right away. No more worrying about finding a seat to eat their lunch. Now they can socialise and eat at their leisure, encouraging social interaction and better eating habits. As we all know, when children have eaten well, they can concentrate better, and this leads to improved focus and learning. All this from a new canopy. A great result!

After some discussion and reassurance, they agreed on a design of steel and polycarbonate in muted colours. This meant that the canopy worked in harmony with the natural environment but had all the advantages of reduced maintenance and greater longevity when compared with a timber canopy. The steelwork was Mahogany Brown (RAL 8016) and the roof was opal polycarbonate.
The resulting covered area measures a fantastic 14000mm x 6300mm and has matching guttering and downpipes. Christ’s College has added 14 picnic benches to the space, creating a really popular dining and socialising area for their students.

The dining area was quite large so we installed four StarSails from our Maxima range. A nice bright porcelain green colour was chosen for the fabric which was waterproof to provide shelter all year round. The steelwork was in Grey (RAL 7000). Once the picnic benches were added the area really came to life. All our colours can be seen here.
The new outdoor dining area is well used by the pupils of Chiswick High School. Not just at lunchtime but at other break times as well. They could even do some work here sheltered from the rain or shaded from the sun. As more schools grow in pupil numbers, the challenge of space at lunchtime is becoming a common one. If you think your school could benefit from a covered outdoor dining area please get in touch. We have a number of designs for you to consider.

A large underused space was identified and a curved roof canopy from our Motiva Duo™ range was measured. The final size was 16000mm x 8000mm and the chosen steelwork colour was White (RAL 9010), with an Opal roof. The area created allowed for lots of seating and the students can use the area flexibly, for dining, studying or socialising as they wish.
An outdoor canopy can create a year-round space for pupils and take the pressure off communal areas such as dining halls when schools grow. This canopy had a polycarbonate roof which offers both shade and shelter. Fabric roofs are available in two materials, shade cloth, which will protect from UV rays, and PVC, which will offer shelter from the rain as well as shade. This canopy looks fantastic and has made a big difference to students at The Coopers’ and Coborn School.

So when we were approached to complete a stylish outdoor area at Worcester Primary School we knew exactly what to do! Worcester Primary School were on the lookout for some high-quality shade canopies to cover a multi-level space at the back of their classrooms. They chose a Maxima Shade Sail for its functional quality as well as its flair and imaginative look. Working alongside Kirkman and Jourdain we installed a Maxima Shade Sail, using ten green (RAL 6005) uprights that, together, held 2 large rectangular sails in a natural coloured fabric.
The result is the capital ‘D’ we talked about at the start. An effective cover from the hot Summer sun that also offers a smart and playful silhouette that will last for many years to come. We only do design with a capital ‘D’. Every one of our shelters will solve a problem but they are so much more, creating beautiful structures that look as good as the job they do. If you want to find out more about our outdoor shade sails or classroom extension canopies then take a look at our whole range of finished projects here.
The covered area means that the children are sheltered from the sun and the rain as they enter the building. The space can be used to store school items and children can play and learn underneath the canopy as well, without having to worry about the weather. The Motiva Linear canopy was installed at 11790mm x 3000mm and includes aluminium gutters and downpipes to manage the rainwater.
The canopy looks fantastic, with Slate Grey (RAL 7015) steelwork and an Opal polycarbonate roof. An added benefit of the canopy is that it will help to regulate the temperature inside the classroom on very warm days. Acting as a shade from the sunshine, the canopy will ensure that the children inside won’t be sat in bright sunlight trying to work or see the board. It is very versatile and St Martin’s Primary school are very happy with it.
A&S Landscape have an extensive range of canopies. In our gallery, you will see more than 1,000 photos of our previously completed projects. If you would like some inspiration, take a look at our gallery.
Working with our trade partner A&S erected two umbrellas at John Perryn Primary School Long Drive, London. The contract included two Maxima™ waterproof Umbrella structure supported on a single upright measuring 4000mm X 4000mm and two post protection pads.
School canopies come in many shapes and sizes. Steel and polycarbonate, or fabric roofed. You can select from a wide range of colours for the steel and roofing, so it is possible to have just the right style of canopy, whatever your project. The canopy which was chosen was an Umbrella style canopy from our Maxima range. It was installed at 5000mm x 5000mm, with Slate Grey (RAL 7015) steelwork and Victoria blue waterproof fabric.
With such a modern school building the canopy needed to be striking and this certainly is. The play area is now completed, and the children can use the area whether it is sunny or rainy. The PVC fabric makes sure that they will be shaded from the sun and sheltered from the rain. A really nice addition to Riverside Bridge School. The canopy adds an important option for the children to have some outside time no matter what the weather has to offer.

A Maxima Sail at 6m x 6m was constructed with four upright steel posts, to offer shade to a seating area on the campus. Smart Steel Grey shade cloth fabric was used which complements the campus beautifully. A&S Landscape offers 16 colour options for our shade cloth fabric, which can be seen here on our website.
The result is a lovely new space, with a definite purpose and a smart design which adds to the school campus. The canopy really brings some style to the previously bare space and brings with it a new option for pupils to socialise and relax at break times. The striking Sail will shelter the children for many years to come. The problem is, there is always an easy solution. To provide shelter from the rain, the easiest solution is to simply stay indoors. However, if we accept that staying indoors is not the answer, there are still a lot of flimsy outdoor shelters that may well do a decent job of keeping you dry.
But dull, uninspiring spaces create dull, uninspired minds. We can learn to fight back against that but we can also create better spaces, so we never have that problem in the first place.
Our Maxima range is all about bringing a little delight back into outdoor playground shelters. A&S Landscape was asked to install one of our most popular designs at Meridian Angel School.
We installed two Maxima Umbrellas at a size of 5000mm x 5000mm that created a large area of shelter and shade in the playground at Meridian Angel School. With Yellow steelwork (RAL 1021) and Lagoon fabric, these shelters look fantastic as well as being safe, thanks for the addition of 1200mm high post pads!
The result is an inspiring space that gives shelter from the rain, shade from the sun and will last for many, many years. All this ensuring that Meridian Angel School have created a valuable space for their children to play in. You can see more examples of inspiring shelters by looking at our gallery of finished projects. Ask yourself, which type of shelter would have the biggest impact on your students? If you have any questions, get in touch and a member of our design team can have a full proposal with you by the very next day.
Working for this valued client our team produced a canopy for Barrio East Limited Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London. The contract included System 60 polycarbonate sheets measuring 11900mm X 3000mm including the bars and trims.
A&S Landscape installed a Motiva Linear straight roof canopy outside two classroom doors, The shelter was installed at 9000mm x 2074mm, with steelwork in black (RAL 9005) and ALU-Tuff™ (aluminium box profile) guttering and downpipes in a matching Dura-coat™ finish. The roof was installed in clear polycarbonate. Heathgate now has an entrance canopy which covers two playground doors, meaning that children waiting are not going to be considering any clouds which might be loitering in the sky above. It is a smart new addition to the playground, which can also be used as extra play or learning space as well.

They were right, the product which they decided to add was the Umbrella from our Maxima range of fabric canopies. Now they have not one but five 5m x 5m Maxima Umbrellas. The fabric used is waterproof, so it offers shade in the summer and shelter in the winter months. This has added versatile spaces for the pupils to enjoy all year round. The blue steelwork and white fabric is a lovely contrast and the school looks amazing.
The campus has placed two Umbrellas together in one location, creating an even larger covered space which we think looks very modern and stylish. The pupils can socialise, eat, relax or even study, should they wish, under their new umbrellas. Why not watch our video to see more of these stunning fabric umbrella canopies? The resulting Tepee with Yellow fabric roofing (RAL 1021) and Blue steel (RAL 5015) makes a bold design statement on the campus. Children have additional protection with the addition of post pads to all uprights. Where there was no shelter there is now a new area which, because of the waterproof fabric, offers both shade from the sun’s UV rays and shelter from the rain. Somewhere new for the boys to enjoy some fresh air, regardless of what the weather has in store.
Should you be considering a canopy, please take a look at our gallery which contains more than 1,000 images of projects that we have completed.
A straight roof canopy was added outside one of the buildings. Measuring 10.4m X 3.85m, there is plenty of covered space for the children to play under the Motiva Linear. The Brown Red coloured steelwork adds a pop of colour to the area. The Opal polycarbonate sheeting also provides protection from harmful UV rays which is essential for children at such a young age.
Tulse Hill Early Years Hub are thrilled with their playground shelter. More activities can be taken outside in the lovely garden area, allowing the children to experience the great outdoors. Play equipment can also be stored under the cover, saving space inside the nursery building. It’s safe to say that this project has been a complete success and we thoroughly enjoyed with the nursery. A&S Landscape has worked on a range of sites supplying solutions for schools, hospitals and hotels.
In collaboration with a business partner our engineers erected a shade sail structure for Isle Of Dogs Stewart Street, London, Greater London. The contract included one 5000mm x 5000mm Maxima™ tensile shade cloth fabric sail structure comprising of one square sail on four uprights including for all stainless steel fixtures and fittings.
A&S Landscape installed a secure buggy store at the early years centre. Measuring 6000mm X 2800mm, there is enough space for several pushchairs to be stored at once in the Cyclo Buggy. The Anthracite Grey steelwork complements the surrounding the buildings and the Opal polycarbonate roofing perfectly. Whether it is raining, snowing or gusting, the pushchairs will remain covered from the elements.
Now the parents using the early years centre can leave their buggy in the store, knowing it will be protected from the weather. The shelter is an excellent addition to the fantastic existing facilities, and further improves their client’s experience at the nursery. A&S Landscape provides a range of buggy and bike storage designs. These products are a great way of encouraging students and staff to cycle to work, promoting a healthy lifestyle. Browse our gallery for more inspiration or read more of our recent projects here. You can also get in touch with our friendly team on 01743 444100.
Working alongside our trade partner our engineers constructed a cycle store at Hercules House Lambeth, London. The contract included one Cyclo ‘City’ cycle store unit measuring 12320mm x 2000mm and to include for 15 cycle racks to accommodate 30 cycles.
The Courtyard School is a free school for pupils with special educational needs. The pupils who attend the school have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and/or speech, language and communication needs. The outdoor space at the school offers another area for children to learn, relax, socialise and have some quiet time. Given we have the British weather to contend with, the school thought it would be pertinent to add some shade and shelter to the garden.
A&S Landscape offers a wide variety of shade and shelter solutions and we have worked with schools for more than 40 years. Some of our canopies have polycarbonate roofing and others offer shade cloth or PVC fabric roofing. The Courtyard chose a StarSail product for their setting. The steelwork is Grey (RAL 7038) and the roof fabric is Moss Green. The StarSail covers a large area and stands at 6000mm x 6000mm. They also added a post protector to the steelwork for extra protection.
The StarSail canopy is very smart indeed. The garden now has a focus and the children have an area of shade and shelter which they can enjoy all year round. Children with additional needs often need some quiet time to help them manage their day and this new canopy area adds another option for children at The Courtyard. We hope that they continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

Two Maxima StarSails™ were added to the site, each measuring 6m X 6m. The sails feature subtle Slate Grey steelwork which contrasts well with the brightly coloured Orange and Raspberry fabric roofs. Made with a waterproof PVC material, the StarSails can be used as a shelter from the rain as well as sun.
The StarSails have created a striking statement to the campus and have been a popular addition already. During break times the students can gather under the shade to socialise, relax and refresh. Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, it’s no surprise that the school prides itself on offering the best facilities for the hardworking pupils. It is no surprise that ensuring there was adequate opportunity to enjoy fresh air and an outdoor learning environment was high on their agenda. A&S Landscape was delighted to work with the school to create a canopy in the playground which has served as a covered entranceway and outdoor sheltered area. The canopy that was chosen was a Motiva Mono canopy, which looks smart in Umbra Grey (RAL 7022) steelwork with an Opal polycarbonate roof.
Our Motiva range of canopies can be configured to provide everything from small entrance canopies to covered walkways and even multi-use games areas. In this instance, the canopy was the perfect option to provide shelter from the weather and a covered entrance into the school. The result is a lovely addition to the grounds at The Fox Primary School. We are sure that the children will welcome the chance to be outside more often, who knows a primary school-aged child that wouldn’t want that!? We are delighted to have helped create additional outdoor space.

Our Maxima range includes the striking Maxima shade sail and it was decided that this was the best product for the requirement at Wilbury School. The sail was constructed on four uprights and measured 3500mm x 3000mm. As an additional safety measure, two post pads in blue were added to the posts which were not adjacent to the fence. This helped to ensure that even occasional playground bumps were kept to a minimum.
The children at Wilbury School are fortunate to have a nice outside space. They can now enjoy more fresh air and outside time, regardless of what the weather happens to be doing. Ofsted recognises the importance of outdoor learning and the options for this are increased by offering shade and shelter to part of the garden. A win-win for pupils, parents and pupils at this lovely school. A&S Landscape can help you with inspiration and design expertise if you think your setting might benefit from something similar. When Millbrook Park School contacted us, they already had outdoor shelters, but whilst they looked pretty good they just weren’t large enough to supply generous covered play space. Working with Millbrook School we took the time to be really clear on what they wanted and needed, designing and installing a Motiva Linear canopy in a smart grey steelwork with opal polycarbonate roofing.
But not only that, we reduced the uprights to just six, meaning that the space was wide and open, reducing the risk of playground accidents. It’s this kind of smart design that means function can always connect with fun. The result is not just a practical outdoor canopy, it’s a shelter that finally does the job it was always meant to do, providing all weather play space for children that they can really use in a stylish, effective outdoor shelter that looks as good and does the job.
The key to any project is to know what the resulting shelter really offers. Is it year round teaching space? Secure storage? A dining and social zone? Who will use it and what do they need? Answer those questions and we are certain we have a solution that will not only solve the problem but add an attractive new space to your campus. Take a look at our full Motiva Linear range today and imagine the kind of difference one could make.
A Maxima StarSail™ shade sail was installed at the school, measuring 5000mm X 5000mm. The Brunswick Green coloured fabric gives the structure a colourful finish, works perfectly with the surroundings. Plus, the Squirrel Grey steelwork on the post contrasts well with the brightly coloured roof.
The pupils of St Paul’s Church of England Primary School already love the new canopy and it is a very popular addition to the playground. If the weather is too hot, the sail provides a cool, sheltered space for the pupils to cool down under. Parents can also wait underneath the StarSail at the end of the day, to stay protected from the elements.
A&S Landscape is proud to offer a range of fabric roof designs, including our Maxima Sail, Tepee and Umbrella models. Get more use out of your outdoor space, while adding a stylish feature with a canopy. Our friendly team is ready to help you start your project, call us today on 01743 444100.
Three straight roof canopies were installed at the site by A&S Landscape. The Motiva Linear shelters all featured brightly coloured Signal Green steelwork, which added a splash of colour to grounds. The Opal polycarbonate used on the canopies also protects against harmful UV rays, while allowing a safe amount of sunlight through. As a finishing touch, St Mary’s Centre also decided to add dark green post pads to the canopies too.
Now the outside space at the school can be used all-year-round, regardless of the weather. With two sheltered play areas and a covered walkway, everyone can move around the site protected from the elements. The pupils can also spend more time outside in the fresh air during their breaks, which will have many benefits on their health and wellbeing.

but customisation doesn’t have to be a huge change. It can just be an adaptation that means your shelter feels at home in its new surroundings.
We call these small changes, ‘tweaks’ and when we began working with Uxendon Manor Primary School to install some outdoor learning canopies, it was all about the tweaks. We installed two Motiva Linear canopies at an overall size of 21000mm x 3000mm in a grey green steelwork. These outdoor playground shelters had matching Alu-Tuff™ box profile guttering in Dura-Coat™ paintwork but the real stand out detail was the roof. Clear polycarbonate roofing was completed with a solid fascia detail that utilised opal polycarbonate tiles giving the roof a more solid look and blending beautifully with the surrounding buildings.
The result of any tweak is something a little unique, a custom-built outdoor playground shelter that looks like no other and will stand the test of time. Not only that but beyond the customisation is the shelter itself. This shelter provides Uxendon Manor Primary School with an additional learning resource that means their children can spend more time outdoors all year round. Old Oak Primary School is a community school located in London. Old Oak has a traditional ethos but combines this with cutting edge teaching and learning. They know what they’re doing and they know what they want, which is why they called in A&S Landscape to install a new outdoor dining canopy.
We installed a Maxima Shade Sail with bold, blue steelwork (RAL5010) and playful Cherry Red tensile shade cloth. With the addition of four light blue post pads, this structure is both aesthetically pleasing and totally safe. It is important to realise that nothing is ever just a sum of its parts. This Maxima Shade Sail is not just steel and fabric. When seen in situ, it’s a functional, yet whimsical design that offers an enjoyable place to eat or play, protecting from direct sunlight and rain whilst feeding the imagination of everybody around.
There are so many decisions to make when adding a new outdoor canopy for play or learning to your school, the most important of which is ‘how do I want people to feel when using it?’. There are so many different types of playground shelters and dining area covers and each one will feel a little different. Do you want to provide strong, confident design or softer, more playful cover? Whatever you choose, you’ll get the same outstanding protection from the elements, but both will offer a different experience for your students. Uxbridge High School in Uxbridge, Middlesex had the thoughtful idea of providing sheltered spaces for their students to use at break times. This school of choice who value being positive, respectful, open minded, unique and determined needed canopies that could offer protection from the elements in all weathers and enough space so that many of their student population could enjoy them. The school contacted A&S Landscape to find some fantastic shelter solutions and they were happy to help.
Following discussions, Uxbridge High School decided to add six brand-new break time canopies to their facilities. One of these was a Motiva Linear™ built to measure 10000mm X 7000mm, sporting both Moss Green steelwork and a Moondust roof. This model was a great choice for their needs due to its versatile, monopitch roof design. They also chose five Maxima Umbrella™ shelters – a stunning option with waterproof PVC fabric which the school had installed with Slate Grey steelwork and White roofs. This meant that they had a range of canopies which added more covered space to their grounds.
Uxbridge High School and its students love the shelters and enjoy spending more time outside during break times throughout the year – even on rainy days! A&S Landscape loved working on this project and wishes the school all the best for the future.
