Outdoor Smoking Area at Coleg Powys

Smart, sharp design comes from working closely with clients and understanding their needs. What you’re aiming to do is answer a question and the question is usually a problem that needs to be solved.

Project Specification

Outdoor smoking areas on schools aren’t that common… but for Coleg Powys, they were looking for something quite specific. An outdoor smoking area for their students (of legal age, of course) but not something to just exist on site. It had to add something. It had to match the ambitions of the college itself.

And that means we had to rise to the challenge.

For Coleg Powys we put together a striking wave canopy design that truly stood out from the premises, giving a covered outdoor smoking zone whilst also producing a strong piece of design that captured the imagination of the staff and students.

Our designs have standard options but we can also cater for any challenge and for those that are looking for something entirely different, we also offer a bespoke service. Working with a wide array of materials and design features gives you a structure you simply won’t find elsewhere.

How rising intake figures are impacting schools and how they can use shelters to combat this issue

As we know, the school-age population has been rising. The count of five to ten year old pupils in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) within 2010 and 2016.

The Department for Education has the responsibility to create the 420,000 new school places that are needed between 2016 and 2021 and there are a good deal of ways that this can be accomplished. New schools are being created, free schools are being funded and existing schools are receiving capital funding to manage, upgrade and grow facilities. With funds being strained, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build more classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a great deal of different uses.
