Play Area For Arboretum Primary School Derby

Arboretum Primary School in Derby is an aspirational school where children are taught to be life long learners. Outdoors there was little shelter available for the children, meaning that their opportunities to learn outdoors were often limited by the great British weather.

This was until they came to A&S Landscape to discuss how they could add a smart new school canopy.

After discussing a number of design options, it was agreed that the Motiva Cantilever canopy with Alu-Tuff guttering and downpipes in matching Dura-coat finish was the best solution for Arboretum Primary School. The clean white of the steelwork has provided a bright, practical, covered play area for the children. They can now do activities and learn outdoors right through the year, without having to worry about the weather. A&S Landscape has also worked with other schools in Derbyshire, like Mary Swanwick Primary School and Ashgate School.

You can see many examples of our projects in our product gallery. We have completed canopies for schools right across the country and we would be pleased to work with you if you are considering adding something similar to your setting.

How playing outside regularly can impact upon children’s social and emotional development

A common but under-researched realm of social and emotional development in children is realising the advantages of spending time outside and how significant the effects are. For such a integral part of childhood, the gaps in research here are somewhat extraordinary. Not least because, the research that currently exists shows that there is conclusive evidence that outdoor time, like outdoor play, or outdoor classrooms, has a notable positive impact on a child’s social and emotional development. These initial studies come from numerous disciplines using a vast range of methods that all lead to the same view.
