What was the project brief?

Playground Canopy Apley Wood Primary School.Apley Wood Primary School in Telford wanted an outdoor shelter to provide extra cover for its Year One area. The staff thought that the best sort of model would be one that was multipurpose and able to be used for outdoor play, dining and more. It had to have a design that would bring cheer to the area and work with the fun feel of the school. It also needed to offer excellent coverage in the unpredictable British weather and have post protector pads to reduce the chance of accidents. We were highly recommended to the institution so they got in touch with us to create their canopy.

What was our canopy solution?

After talking over some of our product range with Apley Wood Primary School, they decided to request a Motiva Mono™. This was a great choice because it is a versatile model with genuine polycarbonate roofing and a solid steel structure that has no trouble providing shelter in wind, rain or sun. What’s more, Ultramarine Blue steelwork and a Clear roof combined to create a bright, appealing design that would encourage children to play freely and have fun outdoors. 13000mm X 3000mm measurements meant that lots of pupils could spend time in the fresh air beneath the canopy, no matter the weather – whether they were playing, eating lunch or even enjoying a lesson. Three post protector pads would also keep the children safe when they were running around with their classmates.

What was the result of the shelter?

The new outdoor canopy has helped Apley Wood Primary School to improve its offering for its pupils. The Year Ones can get outside at playtime and lunchtime year-round, which gives them more options of activities to enjoy, and being in an open space rather than the classroom is a welcome change of scenery. The colourful canopy has lifted the mood of the area and it could even be used as an outdoor classroom shelter, allowing the children to gain valuable experiences while learning outside. Plus, the staff were grateful that we could install post protector pads to ensure the pupils’ safety, as it was clearly a top priority for them. We were thrilled that they were so happy with the project results, especially as the institution was local to our Shropshire headquarters.

Why is outdoor play so important for primary-age children?

Playtime isn’t just a period in which to have fun; it encourages relationship-building between pupils and has other important benefits. Research has shown that it can have a major impact on happiness, wellbeing and general health, with the latter especially important in modern times when children play outdoors so little. It can also help them to ‘let off steam’, reduce stress levels, gain confidence, and even develop their social skills.
