The Hub Pavillion Project in North Ormesby, Middlesborough is a fantastic setting for nursery aged children. This community project is driven to provide the best environment for children to learn and explore the world around them. Part of that was to ensure that the children could learn outdoors as well as indoors.

The outside space had no shelter initially and Ofsted suggested that this should be the focus for future development. This was exactly what the Hub wanted to address when they contacted A&S Landscape, UK specialists in school canopies.

A&S Landscape specialises in a range of high quality, commercial-grade canopies and knew that they would have the perfect product for The Hub. This was decided to be a Motiva Linear canopy at 6800 x 2200mm with Green steelwork (RAL 6005) and opal roofing. Aluminium guttering and downpipes ensured that The children will be sheltered from the rain and also from UV rays for many years to come.

How we can help more children to play outside and benefits of doing so?

Multiple studies recognise that children’s outdoor play is paramount for their healthy development and academic performance. This subject flags the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also highlights the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The prolonged interventions required to reduce parents’ fears require practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces. That is a massive objective that will take many years to accomplish. Yet, there are ways that schools can intervene, to assist children in attaining their essential repeated experience of high quality unstructured outdoor play opportunities, which will aid their development and academic performance.

Continue reading to learn why outdoor play is so fundamental for child development, why it is disappearing and how schools can intervene.

“Excellent job done, the canopy looks great. Just what we needed for our children. Very impressed with the project and the way it was handled.”
