Saddleworth School in Oldham Cover Outdoor Dining Areas

Saddleworth School needed to find a solution to the massive queues they were having in their dining hall during lunchtimes. A&S Landscape helped the school find a cost-effective shelter solution.

  • Steelwork:
    • Gentian Blue - RAL NO. 5010

  • Roof:
    • Opal

A straight roof canopy was installed, measuring a total of 11000mm X 9000mm. The Motiva Linear features mid blue steelwork with opal polycarbonate roofing. In addition, a fabric umbrella canopy was also added to the school site. The white steelwork on the Maxima Umbrella contrasts with the striking victoria blue fabric colour.

The new shelters are used as an alternative seating area, giving the students more options during lunchtimes. They can now enjoy some fresh air outdoors, leaving them refreshed ahead of their next lessons. The canopies were also built near the food kiosks the school added, encouraging the use of these additional serving areas. These outside areas can be used all-year-round, no matter the weather conditions.

Now the existing dining hall has been greatly relieved of pressure and strain, and the students of Saddleworth School can get their lunch much quicker. This has meant that the school has been able to reduce the time of the lunch break, dedicating more time to lessons.

How schools can utilise shelters to combat their increasing pupil numbers to expand their facilities

As we know, the school-age population has been increasing. The figure of five to ten year old children in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) within 2010 and 2016.

The Department for Education has the task to create the 420,000 new school places that are required between 2016 and 2021 and there are a great deal of ways that this can be achieved. New schools are being produced, free schools are being funded and current schools are obtaining capital funding to repair, enhance and develop facilities. With capital being overstretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build other classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have no end of different uses.
