Penketh High School in Warrington Add Covered Outdoor Dining Area

Penketh High School needed to create more seating options for its students at lunchtime. A&S Landscape proposed a large tepee design which was a cost-effective solution for the Warrington school.

Project Specification

  • Product: Maxima Tepee™
  • Size: 21000mm X 7000mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Gentian Blue - RAL NO. 5010

  • Fabric:
    • Light Grey

The installed Maxima Tepee is comprised of three modules and measures a total of 21000mm X 7000mm. There is plenty of space underneath the canopy for the students to enjoy their lunch and socialise outside. The steelwork is finished in a blue colour, which contrasts well with the light grey roofing fabric. The structure fits in perfectly with the surrounding buildings and looks as though it has always been there.

Is dining outdoors a privilege or essential to school children?

There are a huge amount of confirmed benefits to dining outside as a part of the school day. As pupils spend most of the day in a classroom environment, it is of vital importance that they are given time to breathe at lunchtime. In spending this break outside, it not only promotes a relaxing atmosphere but can also curb levels of hyperactivity in a pupil. If a student is directed to occupy their break indoors, it can emulate the classroom environment and prevent them from taking a healthy amount of time to relax. Eating outdoors is also a very sociable activity, unrestrained by the dining hall environment young people can interact with other year groups freely.

Everyone at Penketh High School is impressed with the new canopy, in fact, the school gave this project five stars. The tepee is a very popular place during break and lunchtimes and is used throughout the entire year. The dining hall has been relieved of pressure too, as there are now alternative locations for students to eat their lunch.

Lessons held in the afternoons are also likely to see a more engaged class who are ready to learn after getting some fresh air. It’s great that more staff are recognising the importance of providing an outdoor space which can be used all-year-round.

With intake figures rising nationally, more and more schools are choosing to install canopies to create more space. A&S Landscape has worked with hundreds of schools and offers a range of shade sails, shelters and canopies. Why not get in touch with us today to discuss your needs on 01743 444100.
