School Canopy added to Wood Bank Special School in West Yorkshire
Posted on 31/08/2020
Wood Bank Special School wanted to develop the outdoor spaces of their school grounds. Fitting to their holistic approach to learning, they required an outdoor cover that would allow pupils to be outdoors all year round.
What was the project?
To add a single shade sail structure to the playground which would serve as an efficient shelter throughout the year at Wood Bank Special School.
What was the problem?
During times of intense heat or poor weather, the pupils at Wood Bank Special School could not enjoy the fresh air at break time and lunchtimes due to the lack of an efficient shelter. Outdoor spaces were plentiful, however, they required a high-quality cover solution, and chose to bring on board canopy experts, A&S Landscape.
What was our solution?
The chosen canopy had to be both appealing to the young children, as well as offering high UV protection, and cover from the rain. We felt the perfect solution was one of our shade sails. Their overall aesthetics can brighten up any play area, and due to their exceptional durability, they have one of the longest guarantees on the market. Either built with a waterproof PVC material or standard shade cloth – the school had the option to create a weather-resistant canopy structure or a simple sun shade that would keep out the sun’s harmful rays.
What product did we use?
The shelter installed was the impressive Maxima Starsail™. Standing at 6000mm x 6000mm, with Sapphire Blue steelwork, and a Porcelain Green waterproof fabric, the school canopy is a unique feature on the school grounds. The sail structure was also fitted with a light blue post protector pad to ensure the children’s safety whilst playing.
What was the result?
The children and staff are delighted with the wonderful addition to the playground. This covered area now means that access to the outdoors is no longer dependent on the weather – and it is being used as both a play area and an area for lessons. With the addition of the shelter, this primary school are showing their commitment to holistic learning.
A little bit about the client…
Wood Bank Special School is located in Halifax – a town situated to the West of the City of Bradford. With the Yorkshire Dales only a stones throw away, nature is never too far away. Fitting to this theme, the classes are even named after different animals, demonstrating just how in touch with nature this school is. As a school that is dedicated to the personalised learning of its pupils, this is clearly shown by their decision to transform their outdoor area, making it more attractive and safer to play in all year round.
What is a shade sail?
Shade sails range from a simple four-post structure, right through to the stylish StarSail™. Tension is applied to the fabric between posts, and this ensures that the shelter is highly effective. There are a number of bespoke designs available, take a look at some here. The shade sail has been specifically chosen due to its strength, durability and its ability to provide 90-98% UV protection, but there is also the option to upgrade the material to a waterproof PVC.
Why install a canopy at a special school?
Despite the known benefits of the outdoors to children’s mental health and wellbeing, unfortunately, it is a common theme that many children with special educational needs do not spend enough time outdoors. There are a number of reasons for this, and it could be as simple as there not being anybody available to supervise them playing outside, or that the logistics of getting them to and from school don’t allow them enough time at either end of the day. Therefore, it is absolutely vital that these children don’t encounter another barrier to the outdoors and can access an outside space during their school day.
Like any other school, the environment should be as stress-free as possible, and just having the simple change of scenery, or the extra space to manage challenging behaviours can have a real impact on both the pupil and the teacher. The element of informality also helps ease any tension or upset, and outdoor activities can have a profound effect on both stress levels and anxieties. Therefore, having an area outside the traditional school building accessible at all times is a highly valuable provision to have at a special school.
