What was the project brief?

Wrexham Maelor Hospital in Wrexham, Wales wanted an outdoor canopy to offer shelter to its patients and staff. The team was looking for something functional that would work well in all sorts of unpredictable British weather, but would also lend a striking new element to the outdoor area. They also thought it should have a modern design that reflected the hospital buildings and values, with compact measurements that didn’t take up too much room and complemented the space available. We were pleased when they contacted us and we endeavoured to create the perfect canopy.

What was our canopy solution?

Our helpful team looked at the various approaches with Wrexham Maelor Hospital to discover the best one for them, and they eventually settled on the Motiva Linear™ Lite. The Motiva Linear™ is a model that has many applications and is popular with a range of clients, from healthcare sites to primary schools. We built it to specifications of 5000mm X 3000mm to accommodate this customer’s need for a relatively small shelter that fit into the installation area with ease. What’s more, an Opal roof and Anthracite Grey steelwork gave the space a sophisticated feel, much like the rest of the modern architecture. This all came together to create somewhere the community could use to take some time away from being inside the hospital, without being restricted by the weather.

What was the result of the shelter?

Wrexham Maelor Hospital loves the new outdoor canopy. Thanks to the strong polycarbonate roof, it has given staff and patients a way to spend time in the fresh air throughout the year, which will surely be beneficial for everyone’s mental health. It has improved the efficiency and the look of the facilities outside and the size was ideal for this client’s brief. The shelter could be utilised in a multitude of ways, including as somewhere to have a bite to eat, take a breather, or catch up with colleagues or loved ones. It was a pleasure to build this product for such a well-deserving customer and pillar of the community.

About the client

Wrexham Maelor Hospital serves the people of its Welsh community during both difficult periods and from day to day. It has many of the services and facilities you would expect of such a healthcare site, such as a Minor Injury Unit, an Emergency Department, Maternity and Midwifery, X-Rays and a Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS). We found the team there to be pleasant to work with and are thrilled that our shelter will help people working, visiting and staying at the hospital to enjoy more breaks outdoors.

Wrexham is a new city in North East Wales which has something for all ages to enjoy. You can visit the Parish Church of St Giles, the largest medieval church in Wales, as well as the free Wrexham County Borough Museum for an insight into the area’s fascinating history. Plus, walks in natural beauty are close by in places like the Nant Mill Country Park.

Why are shelters perfect for healthcare sites?

ambulance-cleaning-shelter-gateshead-nhsHealthcare facilities come in many shapes and sizes and they all hugely benefit their communities. Canopies can allow them to improve and expand facilities for their hard-working staff by becoming places to relax during shifts – for example, in a different environment to inside a medical centre. People visiting family or friends in a hospital or care home can use shelters to enjoy their lunch outdoors, even if it’s raining, and this sort of opportunity in what may be a stressful time can be welcome. Also, such structures can be designed to meet the requirements of different healthcare buildings and clients – with extensive measurements for a hospital, a bright design for a care facility or a model made to attach perfectly to a clinic entrance.
