What was the project brief?

Rushcliffe Country Park in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire was searching for a pair of shade sails that could offer shelter to those visiting its green spaces and make them more usable throughout the year. They were needed to shade tired runners from the sun in summer and keep families dry should a rain shower pass overhead in winter. It was important that the structures came with identical designs that reflected the nature and look of the well-managed site, which has won a Green Flag Award every year since 2007. Representatives from the park came to A&S Landscape to find a solution.

What was our shade sail solution?

Together with our client, we looked at all the possible ways to move forward with this project. They eventually settled on purchasing our Maxima StarSail™, a stunning combination of a shade sail and umbrella design around a centre post that can suit applications in a variety of public spaces. We supplied the park with two of these canopies, featuring 4000mm X 4000mm specifications which would be able to protect visitors – such as children playing outdoors or couples taking a walk – from the elements on rainy and sunny days. Also, we provided them with matching Olive Green fabric roofs and Squirrel Grey steelwork so they blended into the surroundings and didn’t detract from the nature around them.

What was the result of the new shelters?

The shade sails have transformed life at the park as now local people can more easily visit in all weathers. Whether parents want to keep their young children out of the sun after running around, or solo or group walkers want to get out of the rain during unpredictable weather, they have made the space more accessible by season with their fantastic sheltering abilities. Plus, the fact that the canopies have the same green, high-quality design makes them look smart and a natural part of the well-maintained area. We were thrilled to be able to contribute our products to a site which is such an integral part of its community.
