Thomas A Becket Junior School in Worthing, West Sussex wanted to find a waterproof canopy that could create a covered social and enrichment space to be enjoyed by their pupils throughout the year. The mental health team at the school thought this would aid wellbeing as it could be used as a quiet area for children to think and reflect in, while getting the benefits of being outside in the fresh air.
A&S Landscape thought this project was a fantastic idea and was determined to help the school find the perfect canopy cover.
We talked through many different options with Thomas A Becket Junior School and they were attracted to the robust, versatile and aesthetically pleasing design of the Maxima Tepee™. This type of shelter sports waterproof PVC fabric and has its own integrated gutter system, so it was an ideal choice to cover their new social area. Their model was built to measure 5m X 5m with Dusty Grey steelwork and a white roof, one of the many colour combinations available. This created a sleek, modern look which also kept functionality in mind, as the free standing canopy would shield pupils from both sun and rain.
The courtyard has been utterly transformed; the school has added benches and the tepee has completed the space, so the children now have a tranquil, covered outdoor area in which to think and relax. The waterproof, fabric outdoor social shelter offers protection from rainy British weather, plus plenty of space for pupils to talk with staff or friends all year round. A&S Landscape was thrilled to aid the institution as they invested in a wellbeing facility.
Thomas A Becket Junior School is situated in Worthing, West Sussex. One of the largest seaside towns on the south coast, Worthing is known for its award-winning beaches and landscape of the South Downs. It also contains one of the oldest working cinemas in the UK – The Dome Cinema – the iconic Worthing Pier, and an Iron Age hill-fort called Cissbury Ring where you can now spot wild ponies.
The school itself has the motto ‘Together Achieving Better’ (Be the best you can be). They enable their pupils to ‘experience the diversity that prepares them for secondary school and the world of work beyond’. Thomas A Becket Junior School has a large array of resources to support learning, including specialist spaces for subjects such as Cooking & Nutrition, French, Music and Technology. We loved working with this dedicated institution to provide them with a canopy that would help them create an area to improve their pupils’ wellbeing.
Health is adversely affected by not getting enough exercise, producing increasing numbers of obesity in children and adolescents. Children are not playing outside as much as they have done before, restricting their contact with sunlight and thus the creation of Vitamin D which helps to tackle infection and keeps skin healthy. Sunlight also helps to manage the development of melatonin which regulates sleep. Electronic devices emit harmful blue light, which can cause headaches and eye strain. Blue light in the evenings can even limit the formation of melatonin, which in turn can make going to sleep very hard for some children.
So what is the answer to this slippery slope that we find ourselves on… More time outside!
School can be stressful and, with the great need to improve children’s mental health in current times, it’s important to invest in practical ways to address this. Relaxation and socialisation are key factors that have both psychological and educational benefits.
Anxiety, stress and tension can affect children in many ways. They can have a negative impact on school performance, interaction with others and self-perception. However, relaxation can enable them to think in more positive and constructive ways and even be better behaved in school. Creating a comfortable, peaceful area for children to reflect in – such as Thomas A Becket Junior School’s new covered outdoor space – and trying yoga or guided meditation can be fantastic ways of helping them to unwind.
Furthermore, giving children opportunities to connect with other people on different levels and in different ways is essential for their wellbeing. In order to be mentally healthy, they need to have good relationships with multiple people – anyone from parents and siblings to friends and neighbours. Adults should help children to maintain their relationships at school, at home and online so they can enjoy the benefits of socialising, like feelings of connection and support in difficult times.
