Outdoor Canopy Installation at Parkdean Vauxhall Holiday Park

Parkdean Vauxhall Holiday Park is a large family-friendly holiday destination situated on the coast, which is frequented by people of all ages, including young children through to grandparents. People visit and move around the park consistently throughout the day, such as between food areas, play areas and entertainment areas. This level of activity and movement creates congestion in the areas that have outdoor seating and wait areas, especially during inclement weather.

The park management needed a covered area to accommodate a high volume of guests using it, as well as providing the guests with a better level of comfort.

Challenges

High footfall: The volume of guests that were moving throughout the park at any given time, which sometimes led to overcrowding.
Weather exposure: The lack of covering caused guests to not sit outdoors during inclement weather (rain/wind).
Limited evening use: The outdoor area was not regularly used by guests once the sun went down and the temperature dropped significantly.
Coastal conditions: The Parkdean Vauxhall Holiday Park faces strong winds as well as salt air coming off the ocean, which results in a significantly shorter life expectancy of the furniture as well as other items located outdoors.

Our Solution

In order to develop a solution, we began by conducting a full site evaluation to ascertain how the guests move around the park. This allowed us to determine the optimal position and design of a covered area capable of alleviating the congestion created by high volumes of guests at the busy outdoor areas and to provide a large covered space for both dining and social activities.

A&S Landscape created a large open sheltered area with the installation of a 22,000 mm x 9,000 mm Motiva Duo™ Canopy. The structure was finished in Slate Grey RAL 7015 and complemented the modern look of the park. The roof was made of opal polycarbonate which allowed natural light through but kept visitors dry from the rain.

To increase comfort, polycarbonate panels were added to one elevation side, helping to shield against wind and increase comfort for visitors. We also included Alu-Tuff™ guttering and downpipes to efficiently manage the rainfall drainage.

The canopy included heating and festoon lights to provide a warm & inviting area at night. Power sockets & TV brackets were also installed within the area to allow for entertainment.

Results

Enhanced comfort: Guests can use the space outside in all weather conditions without interference.
Improved use of space: The covered area is now in use all day throughout the evening hours as well.
Extended time in the space: Guests are staying longer outside, particularly around dining areas.
Weather protection: The structure performs well in high wind and with the coastal environment.

Conclusion

The implementation of this project has allowed Parkdean Vauxhall Holiday Park to better use its outdoor areas. Guests have a space that provides a place to unwind, eat food, and enjoy quality time together in complete comfort. The warmth and light provided means that the area is now usable well into the night.

The installation of the Motiva Duo™ canopy has created a much more flexible and satisfying experience for guests while on the premises. The result is that it now provides a functional, welcoming facility that is used by both employees and patrons throughout the year.
