David Lloyd Basildon Adds a Padel Court Canopy

David Lloyd Basildon is a large, busy health and fitness club located at Festival Leisure Park, Basildon. The health and fitness club caters to a busy membership community that uses its gyms, pools, studios, tennis courts, and padel courts. With increasing demand for racquet sports, the health and fitness club decided to improve its padel facility and prevent further weather-related interruptions.

Project Overview

  • Steelwork:

Jet Black - RAL NO. 9005

  • Roof:

    Opal

The padel court facility lies on the western side of the site, within the busy sports facility. This area is highly active and exposed to changing weather conditions. The club was looking for a long-term canopy system that would increase court availability and improve player comfort. It also needed to be strong enough for open conditions and align with the club’s high design standards.

Challenges

  • Weather disruptions: Rain and wind would prevent members from playing for several hours each day. This limited the chance for members to book the court.
  • Growing demand: Players participating in the sport at the club continued to rise, causing pressure on court availability and increased usage.
  • Exposed court setting: The open sports area at the site meant that windy conditions could make playing uncomfortable and impossible.
  • Premium club standards: With David Lloyd’s premium design specifications, the proposed structure had to reflect this aesthetic.

Our Solution

Over several months, the A&S Landscape team assessed the requirements and the situation at the club. We were able to recommend and then design and install a single Motiva Padel™ court canopy system, suited perfectly for the setting.

A steel-framed curved roof design was chosen as it offered an aesthetically pleasing system which is ideal for the club environment while still providing excellent player protection from the elements. The system also helps provide year-round availability.

Key Features and Materials

Structure: Steel framed Motiva Padel™ solution designed for an open sport environment, designed to be used all year round.

Roofing: The system came with a polycarbonate curved roof structure, designed for effective rainwater runoff and to provide cover over the courts.

Durability: A design engineered to be structurally sound for long-term and frequent use.

Finish: A clean, modern aesthetic designed for a premium club environment.

Results

  • Improved player comfort: Playing conditions are much improved, with reduced wind and rain.
  • Year-round play: The courts can be used throughout the year and for longer periods each day.
  • Enhanced availability: The club can now meet the growing demands for padel sessions from members.
  • Increased facility value: The court facility at the club has increased in value with the addition of the canopy.

How We Were Chosen as Preferred Supplier

David Lloyd Basildon completed a review and comparison of canopy systems available. Long-term durability and value for money were the main factors behind the decision. The design team at A&S Landscape was involved in these thorough discussions to assist in all areas of the design and construction.

We were able to provide input during the review period, which helped the club in assessing cost, long-term lifespan, and maintenance performance.

Following these assessments, A&S Landscape was selected as the preferred supplier. The Motiva™ canopy we supplied was chosen because of its structural reliability and design quality. It is also highly suitable for sport environments with constant usage.

Conclusion

The Motiva Padel court canopy now installed at David Lloyd Basildon ensures a highly reliable year-round playing environment for members that eliminates weather disruption. This ensures the health club can take full advantage of the high demand for padel, providing members with better playing conditions and availability to play the sport they love.
