St Andrews C of E Primary School has the ethos of working together to teach and inspire all of the children. The staff decided to improve the school day experience for the pupils further by adding a covered walkway.
Slate Grey - RAL NO. 7015
Opal
A straight roof canopy was installed by A&S Landscape outside one of the buildings. The Motiva Linear features slate grey steelwork which gives the shelter a sleek and subtle appearance. The opal polycarbonate roofing also blocks harmful UV rays while allowing some sunlight through.
Everyone at St Andrews C of E Primary School is thrilled with the new canopy, and it has been a very popular addition. Classes can line up outside the school throughout the year, protected from the wind, rain and sun. Teachers can also take lessons outside under the shelter without having to plan around the weather. This alternative learning environment will help to engage the pupils as they get to learn outside of the four walls of a classroom.
The school could also store outside equipment under the cover, saving valuable space inside. Parents can stand under the shelter too at the end of the day, while they wait for their children. It’s safe to say that this local school will be getting a lot of use out of their canopy.
Converging studies recognise that children’s outdoor play is integral for their healthy development and academic performance. This topic shows the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also spotlights the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The prolonged interventions needed to reduce parents’ worries require practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces. That is a huge task that will take a number of years to complete. Yet, there are ways that schools can intervene, to aid children in attaining their key repeated experience with high quality unstructured outdoor play opportunities, which will assist their development and academic performance.
