William Henry Smith School in West Yorkshire Add Tepee Canopy
A&S Landscape is often asked to help with what can be considered ‘problematic’ areas on school sites as many want to add additional space.
Sapphire Blue - RAL NO. 5003
Sir Thomas Rich’s School is a grammar school with academy status located in Oakleaze, Gloucester. It delivers education to boys aged 11 to 18 and also provides mixed gender Sixth Form learning.
They had an existing paved area within the school’s grounds that was under-utilised and somewhat wasted. Sheltered by buildings on three sides, it wasn’t a space that the pupils wanted to use. While this might be seen as problematic to some schools, Sir Thomas Rich’s School wanted to do something to bring the area back in to constructive use. Their idea was to install a multi-functional free standing canopy of permanent design, and they asked A&S Landscape to help with outlining options.
A&S Landscape is often asked to help with what can be considered ‘problematic’ areas on school sites. Many schools want to add additional space and in some cases, an area squirrelled away between buildings might be the only option. The great news is that there are lots of options to consider. For Sir Thomas Rich’s School, our solution was the Motiva Duo™ canopy. This great canopy has a symmetric curved roof design which creates an arched effect giving a really sleek look. It is a great option as a standalone structure and works particularly well in a space located between buildings.
In terms of sizing, the Sir Thomas Rich’s School canopy installation came in at 10000 mm by 5000 mm. One of the great benefits of this particular product is that virtually any steel shelter frame dimensions can be covered. A further benefit to clients who want to really individualise their new canopy is that there is a wide selection of steel and polycarbonate colours to choose from. Sir Thomas Rich’s School opted for steelwork in Sapphire Blue (RAL 5003) with an Opal polycarbonate roof.
By re-purposing the existing space and generating an attractive area of shelter, Sir Thomas Rich’s School now have a custom canopy and a great multi-purpose space. The paving beneath means that locating benches in the space is possible. This will turn the area into a fabulous outdoor dining area. The great-looking arch of the canopy’s roofline really brings the space to life, and the area now acts like a magnet to the pupils who want to spend more time outside.
Sir Thomas Rich’s School is more than just a Grammar, Academy and Sixth Form school. It is also a Teaching School. Forming part of the Gloucestershire Schools Teaching Alliance, it is one of the county’s outstanding schools that provides training opportunities for current teachers and for the teachers of the future. This status also shows the high standards upheld throughout the school, which all have a positive benefit for its pupils.
The school has a great affinity with the sports, offering a wide array of opportunities for the pupils to take part. With rugby on the timetable, it’s great to see that a former pupil of Sir Thomas Rich’s School is now playing professionally. Ollie Thorley is now an England Rugby Union player!
As we have already explored, a freestanding canopy can create a fabulous, multi-purpose space on any school, college or university site. But they don’t just provide shelter from the elements. Here are just a handful of the other uses that our versatile canopies can be used for:
There are many recognised benefits to alfresco dining as a part of the school day. As school children spend the whole day in a classroom environment, it is important that they are given time to breathe at lunchtime. In spending this break in the fresh air, it not only promotes a calm environment but can also curb levels of hyperactivity in a student. If a child is to occupy their break indoors, it can emulate the classroom environment and stop them from taking a suitable amount of time to relax. Eating outdoors is also an extremely sociable activity, unrestricted by the dining hall setting children can chat with other year groups easily.
Over on our blog you can find out how schools can allow their pupils to dine alfresco regularly – click here.
Installing a freestanding canopy can be a great option for creating a functional and attractive new space on any school campus. If your campus has a small, under-used space, squeezed between other buildings, then the option for conventional building may be limited. A freestanding canopy can bring a space like this to life quickly, and in a cost-effective way. When balancing the best way to develop your commercial school project, the option of a free standing canopy is well worth considering.
In addition to these benefits, installing a canopy is much quicker and more efficient than building a conventional extension. They require minimal maintenance in the longer-term and the efficient use of materials also make this an environmentally friendly option. A&S Landscape will work closely with you to identify the specific needs that you have for your project. For instance, if your new freestanding canopy will be used at night, then we can also install lighting. With a range of options and features available for all of our products, we can help you achieve a first-class addition to your school campus.
