Tattenhall Park Primary School in Chester Add Curved Roof Canopy and Cycle Stores
Sale High School in Greater Manchester had a decking area on site which was rarely used by the school. The staff decided to replace this designated space with something more useful and valuable. The school was facing a real issue as student numbers were ever rising and they were facing a tight budget, it was decided that adding an outdoor dining area would be the perfect use of the space. A&S Landscape was asked to run the project completely, from the initial drawings to final installation of the curved roof canopy to make everything as easy for the school as possible.
Our design team proposed that we use our curved roof canopy, the Motiva Duo™, to create an external dining area. Measuring 10000mm x 6000mm, there is plenty of space under the large canopy for the students to sit back and enjoy their lunch. To match the school’s colour scheme, we finished the steelwork in a smart Ultramarine Blue colour too. As standard, we included our robust Alu Tuff™ guttering system with this curved roof canopy so the school doesn’t have to worry about the rainwater.
Opal polycarbonate sheeting was used in the roofing to provide protection from UV rays, while still letting a safe level of sunlight to shine through. As part of our package, we also removed the existing surface of the decking area and created a tarmac paved surface for the canopy.
Sale High School in Greater Manchester is very happy with their new dining area curved roof canopy. The new area gives the students the choice to enjoy their lunch alfresco and has also relieved the existing dining hall too. With the addition of a few picnic benches, the space can be used for a variety of applications, all year round. Teachers could use the shelter as an alternative learning environment, or students could study outside during busy exam seasons.
There are a huge amount of established benefits to dining outside as a part of the school day. As children spend most of the day in a classroom environment, it is imperative that they are given time to breathe at lunchtime. In spending this break outdoors, it not only provides a restful environment but can also reduce levels of hyperactivity in a child. If a student is to occupy their break inside, it can echo the classroom setting and stop them from taking a sufficient amount of time to relax. Outdoor dining is also an extremely sociable activity, unconfined by the dining hall setting young people can interact with other year groups easily.
