Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School in Surrey Add Outdoor Dining Area

Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School wanted to create more seating options at lunchtimes and make better use of the school grounds. The staff decided to install a dining area canopy and chose A&S Landscape to complete the project.

Project Specification

  • Product: Maxima Tepee™
  • Size: 10000mm x 10000mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Opal Green - RAL NO. 6026

  • Fabric:
    • Ivory - RAL NO. 1014

A large Maxima Tepee structure was added to an area of the school, measuring a total of 10000mm x 10000mm. The canopy was made with a waterproof PVC fabric roof, so the school could use the shelter in all weather conditions. The ivory coloured roof complemented the opal green steelwork to create a very striking effect. Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School in Surrey also choose to include green post pads to offer extra protection for the pupils.

The tepee structure has been a huge success and made a positive impact on the entire school. At lunchtimes, the pupils of Queen Eleanor’s C of E Junior School can sit outside to enjoy their food in the fresh air. This not only relieves pressure from the dining hall but allows the pupils to relax and refresh properly. Because of the size of the canopy, the school has added several dining benches to the area.

The shelter could also be used as a study area, or a place to socialise during break times. Teachers could even take lessons outside without having to worry about the weather.

What are effects of eating outside and how can schools help their pupils to do this everyday?

There are a great deal of demonstrated benefits to alfresco dining as a part of the school day. As school children spend the majority of the day in a classroom setting, it is paramount that they are given time to breathe at lunchtime. In spending this break outside, it not only promotes a restful atmosphere but can also lower levels of hyperactivity in a child. If a pupil is made to spend their break indoors, it can emulate the classroom setting and prevent them from taking an adequate amount of time to relax. Alfresco dining is also a really sociable activity, unconfined by the dining hall setting young people can talk with different year groups freely.
