Chaddlewood Primary School in Devonshire Add Colourful Shelter
Humberston Academy wanted to refurbish an area of the campus to create a dining and teaching area. A&S Landscape helped the academy to find the perfect canopy which met all of their requirements.
Slate Grey - RAL NO. 7015
A large curved roof canopy from the Motiva range was installed in the internal quad area. The Motiva Duo canopy measures 10000mm x 10000mm, so plenty of covered space has been created. The opal polycarbonate roofing offers protection against harmful UV rays while allowing some sunlight through. Plus, the slate grey steelwork complements the surrounding buildings perfectly.
During lunchtimes, the dining area canopy is used by the students to eat their lunch. They can now enjoy some fresh air, which helps them to relax and refresh ahead of their next lessons. This also relieves pressure from the existing dining hall, as there is now more seating space which can be used all-year-round.
The Headteacher of Humberston Academy also uses the new canopy to teach underneath. This alternative learning environment will help to engage the students as they get the opportunity to learn outside of the four walls of the classroom. There’s no need to reschedule lessons around the weather thanks to the shelter.

There is a lot of research that shows the benefits of spending time in the fresh air; lowering heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones and muscle tension. It can even improve your mood. Enhancements in attention, memory and concentration have also been proven.
How does this impact children in school? Well, being inside for a large amount of the day is linked to increased anxiety and depression. Couple this with the allure of computer games and social media at home and you can see how imperative it is to offer children as many opportunities to be outdoors during the school day as possible.
Spending time outdoors contributes to Vitamin D levels (an important hormone that helps to protect against a selection of diseases such as osteoporosis, depression, heart attacks and stroke). It is stated in studies that many of us do not get enough of this important vitamin, so more time outside is key to help confront this deficiency.
