What was the project brief?

Strensham Water Treatment Works located in Worcester is responsible for delivering clean water to the people in the local area. The site is arranged to ensure that each of the water processing stages are completed efficiently and safely.

Severn Trent Water approached A&S Landscape with a very specific brief which required a level of critical thinking and ingenuity. Their requirement was for an industrial canopy structure to cover a group of acid containers. This type of industrial site requires a whole system approach to ensure that, when choosing shelter solutions, the final design delivers on the specific requirement identified, but also supports the ergonomics of the site in its entirety.

What was our custom canopy solution?

Bespoke shelter we designed for Strensham Water Treatment WorksWith such a specific project brief, it was important for the A&S Landscape canopy architecture designers to fully understand the site and the intended shelter solution usage. It was clear that the industrial nature of the canopy structure needed to be carefully planned. With the requirement for the steel canopy installation to cover vital acid containers, A&S Landscape utilised the Motiva Linear™ straight roof canopy design. Protection of the containers beneath was key to this design. To ensure that this requirement was met, side panels were added to the upper section of the canopy structure on all four sides. Added to this protective upper section, Severn Trent Water requested that the structural steelwork be finished with an acid-resistant coating.

With steelwork finished as per the customer’s requirements and in a colour of their choice, the protective roofing and sides were completed in clear polycarbonate. The finished result was a sturdy, robust industrial canopy designed and installed from a very specific project brief.

What was the result of their custom canopy?

The acid containers are now safely covered and protected from the elements. The addition of the acid-resistant coating to the steel framework of the canopy adds additional protective measures. The result of this industrial canopy installation was very much a bespoke structure. Workers on the site are required to operate under strict compliance requirements, and the installation of this straight roof canopy supports the safe and efficient application of day to day activities.

About the client

Strensham Water Treatment Works is located on Mill Lane in Worcester. Providing safe and clean water for the wider community, the site operates as part of Severn Trent Water. The site itself was centre of a significant refurbishment in 2014, and the addition of the new custom canopy further added to the modern operation of the site.

Clean, safe water is something that we tend to take for granted in the UK, but the need for access to it is vital to our health and wellbeing. With our bodies, on average, made up of 60% water, access to a safe supply is very important. The tendency to take our water supply for granted also contributes to the amount of water we consume. This has an important environmental impact but also affects the amount of energy consumption that households generate. Sites such as Strensham Water Treatment Works are therefore absolutely critical to our everyday lives in terms of ensuring a safe and constant supply of water, that we as individuals can then utilise responsibly.
