Meole Brace School Science College in Shropshire Cover Outdoor Dining Area

Meole Brace School Science College in Shropshire wanted to create more spaces for their students at break and lunchtimes. A&S Landscape designed and installed a straight roof canopy to cover an outdoor dining area.

Project Specification

Shelter we installed at Meole Brace SchoolA large Motiva Linear shelter was added to the Meole Brace Secondary School playground, with plenty of room for seating. The blue steelwork works perfectly with the surrounding buildings and the school’s colour scheme. The Opal polycarbonate roofing allows sunlight through while blocking the harmful UV rays. The canopy has created a popular space where the students can enjoy all-year-round.

A dining pod has also been added to the same area, reducing the queues in the main hall and giving the students an alternative option at break and lunchtimes. This is a popular, cost-effective method of increasing the dining capabilities and capacity at growing schools.

What are effects of eating outside and how can schools help their pupils to do this everyday?

There are a wealth of recognised benefits to alfresco dining as a part of the school day. As students spend a large amount of the day in a classroom setting, it is vitally important that they are given time to breathe at lunchtime. In spending this break outdoors, it not only provides a relaxing atmosphere but can also reduce levels of hyperactivity in a student. If a pupil is made to occupy their break inside, it can echo the classroom setting and stop them from taking an adequate amount of time to relax. Eating outside is also a very sociable activity, unrestrained by the dining hall setting young people can mix with other year groups easily.

Over on our blog you can explore how schools can encourage their students to eat alfresco regularly – click here.

Meole Brace School Science College in Shrewsbury, Shropshire has created an additional dining area, which has relieved pressure from the existing dining hall. We also installed a large dining area shelter for Lymm High School in Cheshire. Students can now socialise, relax and eat out in the fresh air no matter the weather, refreshed for their next lessons. Staff can also choose to teach lessons outside without worrying about the weather, thanks to the new canopy. The entire school has benefited from the new sheltered area.
