Sheltered Play Area at Newtown C of E Primary School

Marine Academy, Plymouth is the UK’s first Marine Academy; it’s a state-funded specialist school with three sponsors who are the Plymouth University, Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council. Catering for a wide range of age groups (from nursery through to the sixth form), the campus is extensive. Outside one of the buildings, there was a long wall which was perfect for adding a school canopy. A&S Landscape was pleased to help design something which added a new dimension to the space.
Slate Grey - RAL NO. 7015
Opal
With a broad range of canopy products and more than 40 years’ experience, A&S Landscape was perfectly placed to help. The best product was decided to be the Motiva Linear canopy, it has steel posts and polycarbonate roofing which makes it durable and long-lasting as well as smart and strong. With aluminium gutters and downpipes, the Linear canopy will be a shelter for many years to come at Marine Academy.
The canopy was a large size, measuring 31700mm x 4000mm and we also added post pads to offer extra protection to children whilst they are playing. The opal polycarbonate roofing shelters the children from UV rays as well as the rain. Now the pupils can play outside no matter what the weather. It is lovely to hear from staff that it is already making a big difference to the pupils at playtime. Well done Marine Academy! We have also worked with many other schools in Plymouth, including Marine Free School.
Play is the quintessence of childhood, when children are well and inarguably being themselves, but for a great number of children the opportunity to play outdoors, enjoying physical activity and fresh air, is restricted. Today’s generation of children aged 4-11 years spend a great deal of hours playing computer games, on iPads and watching TV and so this precious period of activity is more fundamental than ever to counter long periods indoors in front of a screen. Shocking recent studies show that a third of children play outside for 30 minutes or less in a average day. That’s less time outside than prison inmates get! Of the 1,000 UK families who took part in the survey, 82% blamed the unreliable British weather.
Encouraging more outdoor play is not just about the physical element of their health though. Active play during breaks and lunchtimes are also helping children’s mental wellbeing. It teaches them how to discuss their opinions and feelings and listen to those of others. The practice of expressing themselves, risk-taking and sharing are all key stepping stones on the path to reaching adulthood with the skills to discuss, debate and empathise.

“Really happy, the install went very well. It has made a huge difference, it is really raining today and the children are playing outside!”
