If you were a primary aged child, being outside as much as possible would probably be quite high on your agenda. So, to find a large rainbow roofed canopy outside your classroom would be a wonderful surprise. The lucky children at St Lawrence Primary School now have a bright, colourful school canopy extension to their school.

A&S Landscape has a wide range of canopy options. This school were particularly taken with the coloured polycarbonate roofing panels that we can offer on our Motiva Linear canopies. They are a popular addition to primary school canopies because of the colourful light that they throw on to the playground below when the sun shines. A little bit of magic for the children to enjoy.

The canopy that was chosen was from the Motiva Linear range and it was large at 10000mm x 4000mm. A bright colourful space outside the school building which can be used for activities all through the year, all without the need for a traditional extension – perfect!

“Excellent service, on time, a clean site maintained. Efficient team and a great job done! I would recommend! The aftercare has been good.”

The rising issue of childhood obesity and what we can do to help children at home and in school

Childhood obesity is perhaps at its most critical and one of the more serious problems we face globally. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it’s one of the most alarming public health challenges of the 21st century. This global epidemic is hitting low and middle-income countries, more significantly in urban locations. Globally in 2016, the total of overweight children under the age of five was 41 million. Furthermore, overweight and obese children have a tendency to stay obese into adulthood and are at risk of developing health issues like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments while still young.

Childhood obesity and connected diseases, such as diabetes are typically preventable. On this basis, the WHO prioritises the prevention of these conditions in youth, especially because bad dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle are among the leading causes of noncommunicable diseases. These conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and particular types of cancer, substantially give rise to the global pressure of disease, death and disability.

In addition, many significant studies support that overweight and obesity in childhood can negatively influence a child’s executive function and academic potential. Children who are overweight encounter a large level of bullying amongst peers as well as experiences that lower their esteem, hence posing a risk of developing unhealthy social and emotional factors in children. Social and emotional factors and poor academic experiences that can impact a child through to adulthood.
