St Peter’s C of E Primary School in Loughborough Add Playground Canopy

St Peter’s C of E Primary School aims to create an environment which encourages a life-long love of learning in which everyone is valued. They also aim to build an atmosphere of enjoyment and equality of opportunity for all. However, the school lacked an essential space where the pupils could play and learn outside.

Project Specification

  • Product: Motiva Mono™
  • Size: 6000mm X 2400mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Ultramarine Blue - RAL NO. 5002

  • Roof:
    • Opal

With the assistance of A&S Landscape, the school chose a curved roof canopy from the Motiva range. The 6000mm X 2400 mm Motiva Mono canopy has provided the pupils, staff and parents with a space where they can shelter from the elements, all-year-round.

The shelter features an Opal roof material, which offers protection from harmful UV rays while letting some sunlight in. St Peter’s C of E Primary School also chose a striking Marine Blue colour for the framework, which complements the other school buildings. This canopy can be enjoyed for years to come thanks to the Alu-tuff™ guttering system used on the structure.

How Does Learning Outside Positively Effect Children and What Can Schools Do to Help Classes Learn Outdoors

A joyful teacher is a great teacher and one that is spirited about educating children. Introducing a shelter into a school gives both teachers and pupils a opportunity to explore this at the same time and brings with it a positive sense of freedom. Increasing engagement in school is something every teacher is looking to do and with an outdoor shelter from A&S Landscape, it’s made much simpler. The more absorbed students are with their learning, the more their skills improve and the more confident they become in their abilities.

Being outside instead of inside a building, or mundane classroom, all day leads to a healthy relationship with nature and helps children to grow up with an awareness for living things. Teaching children about nature is not necessarily something that is included as part of a curriculum, but it is part of life and an important part of their development as a human being.

Now the young pupils can learn and play outside, no matter the weather. Teachers can also utilise the space to take lessons in an alternative learning environment. This has made the canopy a valuable addition to the school. St Peter’s C of E Primary School were so happy with the project, they awarded A&S Landscape five stars for the work.
