St Paul’s CE Primary School in London Cover Playground Area

St Paul’s Church of England Primary School knew how important outdoor play was and decided to add a shade sail to their playground. This would allow the pupils to spend more time in the fresh air throughout the year.

Why is outdoor play so beneficial to school children and how we can encourage children to spend more time outside?

Multiple studies state that children’s outdoor play is vital for their healthy development and academic performance. This subject raises the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also shows the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The long-term interventions needed to reduce parents’ fears need practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces.

Carry on reading to discover why outdoor play is so crucial for child development, why it is declining and how schools can respond.

Because St Paul’s Church of England Primary School is located in London, outdoor space is incredibly valuable. A&S Landscape suggested using the StarSail design, as the canopy was fixed on one post so the design would be less intrusive. It’s safe to say the sail has been a huge success, and the finished product fits in well with the surroundings.

Now more playtimes can be spent outside, and the pupils can get some fresh air during the school day. This helps them to unwind and refresh before their afternoon lessons, leaving them motivated to learn. Parents could also stand underneath the canopy, while they wait for their children covered from the elements.

A&S Landscape has installed many canopies at schools in London and across the rest of the UK, including Haberdashers Askes Knights Academy.
