Project Specification

What was the project brief?

Customers of the Severn Valley Country Park Visitor Centre in Alveley, Shropshire had asked if a covered outdoor seating area could be added to their facilities, and the centre was happy to include this as part of their planned improvements. Dog walkers weren’t allowed into the on-site café and so were otherwise stuck outside on their coffee breaks. Also, there was no protected area for people bringing their own food to the park to sit in while appreciating the stunning views, during any type of weather.

The team approached A&S Landscape for help with finding a shelter solution to accommodate all of these needs, as well as the increasing number of visitors.

What was our outdoor canopy solution?

Shelter we designed for Severn Valley Visitors CentreThe Motiva Linear™ straight roof model was chosen as the perfect outdoor canopy cover for their new seating area. Built to measure 5900mm X 5000mm, this asymmetric straight roof variant with a Dura-coat™ finish would withstand a whole range of changeable British weather and offer protection from rain and UV rays. The grey steelwork and Opal roof looked fantastic next to the extended, revitalised building and above the new decking that the Severn Valley Country Park Visitor Centre had also installed. Together they would accommodate many more customers taking a rest in the beautiful countryside.

What was the result of their new shelter?

Visitors and staff love the steel canopy and it has enabled the café to extend its seating capacity. It also offers covered space for the centre to hold their popular children’s activities outside in school holidays. Lucky dog walkers and families sitting at the now sheltered picnic benches can enjoy food from the café, or brought from home, while looking across an uninterrupted view of the park and the stunning valley – including the River Severn. Best of all, it can be made use of no matter the weather or season! A&S Landscape was thrilled that the canopy was so well-received alongside the centre’s other improvements and that it could accommodate their increasing number of guests.

How can people protect and support local public green spaces?

Shade sail we fitted at Ashcott Playing FieldsProtecting public green spaces such as parks and footpaths – and supporting them so that future generations can enjoy them too – is more important than ever. Here are some ideas of simple things everyone can do to achieve this.

  • Follow the Countryside Code – respect other people in order to maintain green spaces and reduce unnecessary hassle for those working in them. For example, walk or cycle to them where possible, leave gates as you find them to avoid farm animals escaping or not getting access to food, don’t wander onto private land and don’t disturb historic sites or ruins. Also, protect the environment by taking your litter home with you, not setting accidental fires via barbeques or cigarettes, and keeping dogs under control so they don’t disturb other animals.
  • Support businesses in green spaces – help fund your local park by having lunch or a coffee on your weekend walk instead of going out to a restaurant or coffee shop. You could also take part in paid activities based in green spaces, such as children’s or adults’ craft days and guided nature walks.

A&S Landscape is proud to help public green spaces improve their facilities by supplying them with canopies to suit a variety of needs. Want to find out more about how our products can add to your park’s capacity and visitor experience? Contact us today at [email protected].
