What was the project brief?

Mount Pleasant Primary School in Huddersfield were building a new state-of-the-art campus. As part of the work, the staff decided they wanted to add several covered walkways alongside the buildings. A&S Landscape was asked to design, manufacture and install multiple shelters which would protect the staff and pupils from the weather while matching the new school’s aesthetics.

What was our shelter solution?

We used our Motiva Linear monopitch straight roof variant for both of the structures. The school had a choice of any RAL colour for the steelwork and decided to finish both of the shelters with Anthracite Grey, creating a sleek and modern look. Opal polycarbonate sheets were used on the roofs of canopies, providing protection from harmful UV rays. This will allow the pupils to spend time under the shelters safely during the summer months.

The solid steel framework featured on the shelters means the school can use the walkways for many years to come. Our aluminium guttering and downpipes help lower the level of maintenance required from the school too. Because the Motiva Linear is built with one side of the roof higher than the other, rainwater will flow into the integral guttering, and any balls accidentally thrown onto the roof can roll back down. Mount Pleasant Canopy

What was the result of the new covered walkways?

The pupils and staff of Mount Pleasant Primary School can move between the classrooms protected from the weather, keeping them dry from any rain, wind or snow. The covered space can also be used during playtimes, allowing the pupils to spend more time outside in the fresh air. This will have many benefits on their personal, social and emotional development.

Outdoor play equipment could also be stored under the canopy, saving space inside the school. And at the end of the day, parents can wait under the shelter away from the elements. The walkways are the perfect finishing touch to the new school and we thoroughly enjoyed seamlessly working alongside the construction companies to install them.

About the client

Mount Pleasant PrimaryMount Pleasant Primary School is based in Huddersfield and moved into their brand-new purpose-built campus in September 2018. The staff have described this time as the most exciting period in the school’s history and it was a privilege to involved in the new building.

We know that the new school premises will have a huge impact on the pupil’s educational experience. And we think that is fantastic that the staff wanted to include a covered space outside in their initial plans. Now the pupils can learn both inside and outside of the classrooms for a varied educational environment.

How we can help more children to play outside and benefits of doing so?

Converging studies recognise that children’s outdoor play is key for their healthy development and academic performance. This matter emphasises the benefits of outdoor play in early childhood on physical health, mental well-being, and social and cognitive development. It also identifies the need to change the trends so that children can have regular access to outdoor play. The extensive interventions necessary to reduce parents’ worries need practitioners’ training, policy changes and improved urban planning for safer environments and natural play spaces.

Why invest in a covered walkway?

A covered walkway canopy is a cost-effective way of creating a defined path and all-weather cover between classrooms and buildings. This protects students, pupils, staff and visitors from the weather, preventing books and equipment from getting damaged by the outside conditions. Usually the walkways can be used by the pupils during break and playtimes too, as a shelter from the weather.

Walkway canopies can also connect schools which use mobile classrooms and demountable units, helping spread out campuses feel like a single site.

We offer a range of options for our covered walkways, including:

  • Freestanding
  • Wall fixed
  • Straight roof
  • Pitched roof
  • Curved roof
  • Side panels
  • Post pads
