What was the project brief?

Hatfield Peverel Infants School in Essex wanted to add a covered walkway to their site, to further improve the pupils and staff’s daily experience. However, it was important that the cover worked with the rest of the surrounding environment. The shelter also needed to be finished to the highest levels of quality, so that it would last for many years.

What was our school canopy solution?

Colourful canopy we designed for Hatfield Peverel SchoolAfter working with the Essex primary school, we decided upon a straight roof canopy solution using our Motiva Linear™ product. The full contract included the design, manufacture and expert installation of the straight roof shelter, meaning the school didn’t have to worry about anything. So that the shelter gave the school the sturdiness they required, we used our Alu Tuff aluminium guttering system.

To help the straight polycarbonate roof canopy fit in with the primary school, we used a multicoloured polycarbonate roof design. This created a striking rainbow effect which we know the pupils will love. Not only has a focal point has now been created at this school, but the canopy will provide fantastic levels of shelter too.

What was the result of their new covered walkway?

Everyone at Hatfield Peverel Infant School is in total agreement that the coloured polycarbonate canopy has been the perfect solution. Now when the pupils are moving around the school building, they are protected from the elements, and will no longer turn up to their lessons wet and cold. This outdoor shelter has many other useful applications too, as it could be used as an outdoor classroom space or storage area for play equipment too.

In the future, the infant school could decide to further increase the useability of the canopy by adding to the existing structure. Glazed panels could be added to the sides of the existing canopy, and even heating and lights could also be fitted.

About the client

Hatfield Peverel Infants School is based in Chelmsford, Essex and takes in local children aged from four to seven. This local village school is currently developing their areas for outdoor learning, which is brilliant as they have lovely leafy grounds which provides a great learning environment.

We really enjoyed the opportunity to work with such an amazing school and make an impact on the education experience of many of the local children. We hope we get to return to this school one day and install another one of our popular school canopies.

Why schools should prioritise playground safety during break times and how the steps they can take to do so

Play areas and any outdoor play equipment is a fantastic way to give your pupils a healthy option to get a break from the classroom. School children getting exercise while spending time with their friends is something that schools should certainly encourage, but it’s also hugely important that the fun isn’t ruined by a child getting injured while using the playground.

It’s predicted that in the UK alone, around 40,000 children suffer from playground accidents. A large amount of these even end up in the hospital or A&E, making it pivotal that schools do everything they can to carry out proper playground safety. UK schools across the country struggle with making their playgrounds as safe as possible – luckily, a lot of these accidents can be averted with vigilant supervision.

By following safety instructions and evaluating surfaces and equipment, you can do a lot to prevent possible accidents that your students may have – making it a place that can be safe and fun to play around in with a reduced amount of hazards.

How does A&S Landscape help primary schools?

Sail we designed for Stapleford Primary SchoolOver the past 40 years, we have worked with many schools across the country, installing a range of cycle shelters, canopies and shade sails. There’s been a large incline of schools choosing to add covered options to their site, helping to improve their existing facilities and the level of education they provide.

One popular use of our canopies is to create a playground shelter. This can be achieved with a steel and polycarbonate structure from our Motiva range, or with a fabric shadecloth fabric sail structure from our Maxima options. A fabric umbrella is often ideal, as the single upright design creates more covered space underneath. Waterproof fabric can also be used so that the shade sail structure can be used all year round.

Many primary schools are also adding a cycle store to their site, which offers a secure shelter for the pupils to leave their bicycles, scooters and tricycles. Cycle racks can be installed underneath the straight or curved roof canopy design, we can also add side panels to offer protection from the weather too. This is also a great way of encouraging your pupils to cycle to school, helping to protect your local environment and encourage an active lifestyle.
