Project Specification

What was the project brief?

King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy in Birmingham were making preparations for the return of their students in September after COVID 19. One of the high priority items was to get better use out of an external area on campus by adding an outdoor canopy. A&S Landscape worked very closely with the school to finalise the design of an attractive canopy, from our amazing range of shelter solutions.

What was our timber shelter solution?

Handsworth Wood Girls' AcademyFor this project, we based our timber canopy design on our popular option of the Motiva Linear™ straight roof shelter. The frame was featured in a natural timber finish, which works perfectly with the opal coloured polycarbonate roof. An important part of the brief was that the shelter provided UV ray protection, while still allowing a safe level of sunlight through. Our unbreakable polycarbonate sheets were the ideal choice and best alternative to a fragile roofing system.

Covering a total of 26000mm X 5000mm, this timber canopy has been the perfect solution in helping the academy create a large clear span area for the students in a natural environment. There are many useful applications of this shelter too, lessons could be taken in this outdoor classroom, street furniture could be added to turn this into a dining shelter, or it could be a great play area for the younger pupils.

What was the result of their wooden canopy?

King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is thrilled with the addition of the new outdoor canopy and that it was efficiently installed before the start of the new term by our specialist installation team. Outdoor places in schools have now become even more valuable in effort to distance students, so it’s great that this academy now has a space to use all year round.

No matter the weather, the shelter can be used all year round thanks to the timber supports which give it enhanced strength. This will also allow the students to enjoy some much-needed fresh air in between lessons come rain or shine. Eating alfresco has also been proven to provide many benefits to mental health and now this is an option at the school throughout the year.

About the client

King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy is a non-selective girls’ academy which takes in pupils between the ages of 11 to 18. This fantastic academy is based in north-west Birmingham and is committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which meets the needs of their students and their aspirations.

We were so pleased to have the opportunity to work with this academy and the King Edward VI Academy Trust to install one of our timber frame canopies. We hope this has helped the school to safely welcome back their students and start a new term of learning.

Why ensuring your playgrounds are safe is so important and how this can be achieved

Playgrounds can become dangerous for a wide variety of numerous reasons. Unsafe behaviour is obviously something that teachers and students alike should be on the lookout for. But along with protecting children from the weather, uneven and improper surfaces can also cause falls – and unsafe or damaged outdoor equipment can abruptly turn the fun sour.

It’s estimated that in the UK alone, around 40,000 children fall victim to playground accidents. Copious amounts of these even end up in the hospital or A&E, making it imperative that schools do everything they can to enforce proper playground safety. UK schools across the country have trouble with making their playgrounds as safe as possible – thankfully, a lot of these accidents can be avoided with observant supervision.
