What was the project brief?

Great Torrington SchooShelter with sides we created for Great Torrington Schooll in Great Torrington, Devon were on the search for two canopies that could perfectly fit their needs. They wanted one which could provide a sheltered queuing area for students purchasing food from the snack shack, and one which could work as a dining canopy. The most important aspects to the school were functionality, stylish design and great coverage. After speaking to several other companies, the Headteacher came across the A&S Landscape website and discovered exactly what they were looking for.

What were our canopy solutions?

A&S Landscape went above and beyond to adapt its products to this client’s requirements. Great Torrington School decided on a Motiva Mono™ of 14000mm X 10000mm for their snack shack area shelter, which would offer lots of space for students waiting to choose food and drink during break times at the much-loved dining facility. This particular canopy model has a monopitch asymmetric roof which is well-suited to covering queuing areas. For the dining shelter, the Motiva Duo™ best fit the bill, thanks to its symmetric design and high customisability – in this case, A&S Landscape was able to build it to a huge 25000mm X 8000mm! Both canopies provided excellent protection from wind and rain and boasted matching, appealing designs of Gentian Blue steelwork and Opal roofs.

What were the results of their new shelters?

The students make great use of the two canopies. The Motiva Mono™ keeps them dry in wet weather when they’re queuing at the snack shack, and the Motiva Duo™ has created a fabulous covered dining area that lets them eat outdoors throughout the year. Both shelters are welcome, modern additions to the facilities and they have really lifted the school’s architecture. Their versatility means that they could also be used in other ways, including as outdoor classroom buildings. A&S Landscape is glad that the products were so well-received and that they will provide the children with more options concerning where to spend time during their breaks.

How can food kiosks and dining shelters improve schools’ facilities?

Freestanding canopy we made for Great Torrington SchoolSchools today face many challenges, and one of them is expanding and improving upon their facilities. Dining is an important area to consider when tackling this, as lunchtimes and break times take up a significant portion of students’ days and they are essential for their wellbeing.

Food kiosks allow schools to sell food and drink in areas that are separate from congested indoor dining halls. They can be used throughout the day to cater to increasing numbers of students and can be a great morale booster – especially in stressful periods like exam seasons! They can be installed with or without seating and finished in a variety of exterior options to suit any institution.

Dining shelters are also fantastic additions to schools’ facilities, because they offer a personalised and cost-effective method of creating large new dining areas where students can eat and socialise outdoors. This can have many mental health and academic benefits due to increased space, time in the fresh air and relaxation with friends away from the pressures of learning.
