What was the project brief?

Ysgol David Hughes in Menai Bridge was hoping to find a selection of outdoor shelters that could change how its community thought about and used its outside areas. The team there wanted a matching set of fabric canopies that would look clean and sleek on its playground, plus a large polycarbonate roof design that could be utilised for different purposes based on the ever-changing needs of the institution. It was a great opportunity for A&S Landscape when Ysgol David Hughes decided that we were the right company to create its new facilities.

What was our shelter solution?

At the conclusion of our talks with Ysgol David Hughes, they ordered one of our Motiva Duo™ shelters – a curved model which can come in virtually any dimensions to suit both our customers and their available space. This was useful as they were able to select 14000mm X 7000mm measurements with an Opal polycarbonate roof that could cover students when spending valuable time outdoors, whether they were learning or taking breaks. What’s more, we installed four identical Maxima Umbrella™ canopies, which were well-suited to the playground and boasted a smart, commercial-grade design. The 4000mm X 4000mm specifications and White fabric roofs were a fantastic sight when set up in a row, and they could provide easy, attractive shelter in sudden Welsh downpours. As a bonus, we supplied all the outdoor canopies with White steelwork for a cohesive feel.

What was the result of the outdoor shelters?

Ysgol David Hughes has found brilliant benefits in its new canopies. They have revolutionised the grounds and now, unpredictable weather isn’t such a problem when students want to get some fresh air between lessons. The shelters have a wonderful, sleek feel with their matching White designs and they can be used as everything from a break space to an outdoor classroom shelter. It was a pleasure to see our products received so well by our customer.

About the client

Ysgol David Hughes is a bilingual comprehensive school with approximately 79 teachers and 49 support staff that caters for over 1,100 students in south-east Anglesey. The community is at its heart as it has a sports centre featuring a dance hall, fitness room and large sports hall, which is also open to the public on evenings and weekends. It has heavily invested in technological equipment and resources in recent years, and we were proud to add our canopies to its facilities.

Ysgol David Hughes is situated in Menai Bridge on the banks of the Menai Strait, and it is known for its two bridges – Thomas Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge, the world’s first iron suspension bridge, and the Britannia Bridge which was originally built to carry rail traffic. The town also has many enjoyable shops to visit, including bookshops and antique stores, and local seafood to taste at its pubs and restaurants.

How can secondary schools make use of canopies?

Senior schools often have hundreds of students to cater for at once and need a huge amount of space to meet all their needs. Canopies can offer useful all-weather solutions to these daunting challenges and more. One type that is popular with institutions is the dining shelter, which allows children to enjoy the positive impact of eating ‘alfresco’ and gives them more elbow room when eating lunch. Shade sails can create helpful relaxation spaces or playground canopies with their fun fabric roofs, while covered walkways can help everyone stay dry when moving around a site of multiple buildings in wet weather. Also, entrance shelters can spruce up the way in to a school and help make visitors’ arrivals a smoother experience through their signposting. Bicycle shelters can be incredibly useful too, because they provide somewhere safe for students and staff to place their bikes and have the added benefit of keeping grounds clutter-free.
