Bespoke Canopies at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community

Located on the Hotmill Plateau at Ebbw Vale the two storey school comprises a 420 pupil Primary School, 150 Special Educational Needs School and an integrated Children's Centre. Facilities include a large shared hall and dining space, café, hydrotherapy pool, sports hall, specialist teaching rooms and an extensive landscaping scheme.

Project Specification

A requirement for canopies suited to this prestigious scheme resulted in A&S Landscape working with international architect BDP to take ideas from drawing board to reality. The galvanised finish and large section steels suit the school design perfectly and the wide span nature of the design provides functional canopies that have already proved themselves in the high winds and snow experienced on this exposed site. A&S Landscape worked with the main contractor to incorporate stub feet allowing easy finishing of surfaces ahead of swift canopy installation.

The children at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community have a fantastic setting and the canopies allow for more time outside regardless of the weather. The children have shelter from the sun’s UV rays in summer and from the wetter weather in the winter. A&S Landscape was delighted to have been part of this really exciting project. What a fabulous school Ebbw Fawr is.

Why schools are using canopies to expand their provisions during a period of rising intake numbers

As we know, the school-age population has been increasing. The quantity of five to ten year old pupils in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) between 2010 and 2016.

The Department for Education has the duty to create the 420,000 new school places that are required between 2016 and 2021 and there are a good deal of ways that this can be achieved. New schools are being created, free schools are being funded and existent schools are obtaining capital funding to support, improve and expand facilities. With funds being stretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build further classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a lot of different uses.

Some applications of outdoor sheltered areas include:

• Alfresco dining areas

• All-weather sports pitches

• Outdoor classroom

• Cycle Store

• Outdoor theatre
