What was the project brief?

Outdoor canopy we fitted at Archbishop Holgates SchoolArchbishop Holgate’s School in York wanted a dining shelter to enable their students to eat outdoors in all weathers. They wanted it to have side panels and a durable build for long-lasting protection from the elements, as well as an appealing design that would complement the current buildings. A&S Landscape was delighted when this school got in touch with them and endeavoured to find just the right product to meet all of their needs.

What was our dining canopy solution?

There were several possible avenues to explore when it came to different models, but Archbishop Holgate’s School decided on the Motiva Duo™ after much discussion with the A&S Landscape team. They chose this particular product because of the reliable, solid steel framework and polycarbonate roofing that allow it to offer fantastic shelter for many years. Built to measure 15000mm X 6000mm and installed with handy side panels, the free standing canopy was perfect for keeping students out of the rain and wind while eating and socialising outdoors. What’s more, the Opal roof and Slate Grey steelwork immediately looked at home in the school grounds, as they created a classic, subtle look that blended well with the existing architecture.

What was the result of the new shelter?

The dining canopy was incredibly well-received at Archbishop Holgate’s School. Staff and students alike can now spend lunchtimes outside in any weather and get the benefits of taking their breaks in the fresh air, away from stuffy classrooms. The canopy could even have other uses, such as a new covered space for outdoor learning. This project was a great example of how secondary schools can benefit from installing shelters, and A&S Landscape was pleased that the children at this institution would get such great use out of their new facility.

Testimonial

“The dining canopy works remarkably well. It is a popular facility. Children are using more outside areas when eating, especially whilst lunches now are very much grab and go.”

Archbishop Holgate’s School

About the client

Archbishop Holgate’s School is a Church of England secondary school and sixth form with academy status. The staff have created a high-achieving community – they were proud to be the best-performing state school in Yorkshire and the Humber and be ranked in the top 4% of all schools nationally for their post-16 results in 2019. Ofsted judged them to be ‘an outstanding school which provides an excellent quality of education and care’. Furthermore, they believe that offering students opportunities beyond their excellent curriculum is essential for personal development, and such activities range from the performing arts to sports. A&S Landscape found installing the canopy at this school to be a breeze and wishes the staff and children all the best for the future.

This academy is situated in York, a city of great historical significance. Once the capital of a Viking territory, this time can be learnt about in an immersive fashion at the Jorvik Viking Centre, while the timber-framed houses of the Shambles can make anyone feel like they’re walking in the Middle Ages. There are many fantastic attractions around to explore, such as York Minster – a truly stunning gothic cathedral – York’s Chocolate Story for visitors with a sweet tooth, and the amazing York Art Gallery. Also, the Yorkshire Dales are close by, so getting back to nature in the Northern countryside is easy for holidaymakers, plus locals like the students of Archbishop Holgate’s School.
