A school playground is more than just a space for playing and jumping – it’s an essential environment for a child’s social, physical, and emotional development! However, ensuring that a playground is safe and secure is paramount. You may be wondering what the playground safety regulations are in the UK, and luckily for you, you’re in the right place!
In this guide, we’ll take you through the current playground safety rules and give you some tips and tricks on how to create a safe school playground. And, here at A&S Landscape, we supply playground shelters that provide essential cover and protection.
Ready to understand playground safety a bit better? Let’s get into it…
Playground safety regulations in the UK: What are they?
First of all, it might be beneficial for you to understand the current playground safety regulations. At the moment, there are two types of law that cover playgrounds in the United Kingdom. The main thing to be aware of is the Health and Safety at Work etc Act (1974), which is the major legislation covering playgrounds. There is a duty under Sections 3 and 4 to ensure the health and safety of users, so far as is reasonably practicable. The Health and Safety Executive looks for a systems approach to safety and for playgrounds to meet relevant standards or guidance.
Essentially, you’ll want to design a space that is inclusive, accessible, safe, and secure, while taking careful consideration of various safety factors. By adhering to these regulations above, you will demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of your students and create a truly safe play environment.

Having a safe playground has many benefits, including:
- Minimising the risk of accidents and injuries
- Increased physical activity for pupils
- Enhanced social and cognitive skills
- Encourages outdoor play
Provide optimal shade with a canopy
Our first recommendation is to invest in a school canopy! A canopy or covered structure can provide valuable sun safety and protection from harsh weather conditions, allowing pupils to play outside all year round. And, it can be big enough to cover playground equipment, so you don’t have to worry about slippery slides or hot swing seats.
Here at A&S Landscape, we have playground shade sails that are ideal for enhancing playground safety, available in a range of vibrant colours. Made from durable shade cloth and PVC fabric, these materials offer a combination of strength, durability, value, and up to 90-98% UV protection. They’re also available in 14 unique colours! Our PVC fabric is extremely waterproof, offering an increased lifespan and being available in 40 colours, so you’re sure to find a design that you like.
Use clear signage and communication
Clear signage and instructions are essential for promoting safety in outdoor learning environments. You can use visual cues like symbols and pictures to help children understand the correct use of equipment and designated play areas. Equipment usage signs can illustrate the correct and safe way to use playground equipment, ensuring that pupils are using it safely and correctly. Clearly displayed rules, such as ‘no running’, will also help children to understand expected behaviour, fostering a more respectful play environment.
Encourage your members of staff to be on hand to provide guidance and support when pupils need it. Regular safety briefings and training can help to empower teachers and give them extra confidence to supervise outdoor learning and play effectively and respond quickly to any incidents should they occur.
Consider surfacing and flooring
Did you know that the type of surface used in your playground can make a huge difference in safety? We recommend choosing impact-absorbing materials such as rubber mulch or ties, or poured-in rubber surfacing. These surfaces are designed to cushion any falls during play and reduce the risk of injuries.
Avoid hard surfaces like concrete, as it offers very little protection in the event of a fall. For areas with specialised equipment, like climbing frames or slides, make sure appropriate surfacing is installed that extends beyond just the equipment. Choose age-appropriate equipment that is challenging for pupils without posing risk – equipment with soft edges, protective elements, and non-slip surfaces can help to minimise accidents, bumps, and falls. We’d also recommend regular inspections and keeping on top of maintenance to identify and address any wear or damage.

Remember to think about accessibility and inclusivity too – install wide paths to make it easy for students to navigate their way around, or opt for inclusive play equipment. Have a read of our blog: How to Create Outdoor Learning Spaces for Students With Disabilities for more information.
Maintenance and supervision are essential
Ongoing maintenance and active supervision at all times are important for guaranteeing the continued safety of your outdoor learning space. We recommend inspecting the area regularly for any hazards like loose or broken equipment, sharp edges, or trip hazards. Always address any issues that you spot immediately to maintain a safe environment.
In a school playground, there should be an adequate number of staff around to provide supervision during outdoor play and activities. As well as just observing, they can engage with children, offer guidance, and intervene if necessary to prevent any accidents or injuries.
