Wistaston Church Lane Academy add Striking Shade Sails in Cheshire

When the weather is kind to us and the sun is shining, we need to ensure that our children have some shade from the UV rays. This was the motivation for Wistaston Academy when they realised that they wanted to add some shade to their school grounds. The field area was crying out for some shade and that is when we came on board to help the school look at the options.

Sails we installed at Wistaston Church LaneA&S Landscape can install a wide range of school canopies, steel and polycarbonate or fabric roofs, Umbrella, Tepee, straight or curved roof designs. We can even create bespoke designs so the options really are endless.

The school decided to go with a fabric shade sail from our Maxima range and not one, but two sails were installed at 12000mm x 6000mm on to six steel posts. The design was really striking, the posts were yellow (RAL 1003) and one sail was blue and one green. You can download the Maxima Sail brochure to find out more about this popular fabric canopy.

The canopies are a real feature at the school, visitors often remark on them. The children like them because they can use the new shaded space to enjoy the outdoors even when it is very hot. Imagine sports day without some shade for waiting and cheering children. This worry is now a thing of the past at Wistatston Academy. A&S Landscape was delighted to work with the school on this project and we are very pleased with how the project has turned out.

How the social and emotional development of children is impacted by regularly playing outside

A common but under-researched topic of social and emotional development in children is realising the effect of spending time outside and how significant the effects are. For such a significant component of childhood, the gaps in research here are somewhat startling. Not least because, the research that currently exists indicates that there is clear evidence that outdoor time, like outdoor play, or outdoor classrooms, has a notable positive impact on a child’s social and emotional development. These initial studies come from various disciplines using a vast range of approaches that all lead to the same idea.

Specifically, studies concentrating on; risk-taking, sensory skills, confidence, and anxiety identify how outdoor play favourably influences children’s social and emotional development.
