Crisp White Shade Sail Canopy at College in Newport

With over 23,000 students, Coleg Gwent is one of the top-performing colleges in Wales. Some of these students are located at the Newport campus and it was here that we needed to add a shaded seating area.

Project Specification

  • Product: Maxima Sail™
  • Size: 12000mm x 6000mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Galvanised

  • Fabric:
    • White

Students required shade and seating to use in between lessons, at lunch and break times or just to socialise with friends.

The feel of the campus is modern and we wanted to keep this feeling with the college canopy, so a product was chosen from our Maxima range which incorporated two large square shade sails. The structure measured 12000mm x 6000mm and used six steel uprights.

The posts were galvanised and the shade sail fabric was bright crisp white. The canopy will keep students cool and give them a designated seating area for many years to come. These sails can be configured in any number of ways, overlapping, square or triangular sails, or indeed be turned in to completely bespoke canopies. A&S Landscape also worked with Coleg Gwent to install more white sail shades at the Monmouth campus. And we also added two fabric tepees to Dina Bran High School.

Should eating outside at school be a privilege or necessity?

There are a great number of recognised benefits to eating outside as a part of the school day. As school children spend most of the day in a classroom setting, it is imperative that they are given time to breathe at lunchtime. In spending this break outdoors, it not only promotes a relaxing atmosphere but can also lower levels of hyperactivity in a pupil. If a pupil is forced to occupy their break indoors, it can mirror the classroom setting and stop them from taking an adequate amount of time to relax. Eating outside is also an extremely sociable activity, unconfined by the dining hall setting students can mix with other year groups easily.

Over on our blog you can learn how schools can encourage their pupils to eat alfresco regularly – click here.

To see images of our projects you can take a look at our gallery for some inspiration. We also have a Motiva range of canopies which are steel with polycarbonate roofing. These add another option should you want something other than fabric. We’ve also completed many other projects across Wales, including a shelter at Victoria Primary School and at Llantwit Major School. If it is definitely fabric you are looking for then you also have PVC to consider, which is waterproof rather than the shade cloth which is not waterproof.
