What was the project brief?

Wistaston Academy in Crewe wanted to add an enclosed outdoor shelter to their facilities to act as a multi-purpose space that could be utilised in all weathers. The team at the school wanted it to have a modern and durable design including roller shutter doors, as well as be appropriate for everything from play to learning. They got in touch with A&S Landscape, who had the expertise and know-how to put forward several innovative ideas for the project. The company had only just completed the installation of a previous shelter at the school when Wistaston Academy inquired about a second, so the staff were confident that it would meet their requirements.

What was our enclosed canopy solution?

Enclosed shelter we designed for Wistaston AcademyFollowing talks about the different models that could fit their needs, Wistaston Academy chose to have a Motiva Linear™ installed. Thanks to its robust framework and monopitch roof where one side is higher than the other, the canopy would offer shelter from the harshest weather for pupils and staff. The combination of an Opal polycarbonate roof and Blue Grey steelwork created a stylish look and a focal point in the school’s outside space, and A&S Landscape installed electrically operated roller shutter doors alongside glazed panels to enclose the facility. All of these aspects came together to provide a versatile, spacious canopy of 9000mm X 6800mm where children could play, learn and more.

What was the result of the shelter?

Wistaston Academy was overjoyed with the enclosed canopy; they thought that A&S Landscape had done just as fantastic a job as their first project at the school. The side panels and roller shutter doors ensured maximum safety and shelter, and the contemporary colours resulted in an attractive new area where pupils love to spend time playing and socialising with their classmates, or taking lessons in the outdoor classroom gazebo. The opportunities are endless with such a versatile model. A&S Landscape was thrilled with the glowing feedback and is glad that the custom canopy will offer so many uses to this client.

About the client

Wistaston Academy is a primary and nursery school that promotes positive mental health for all of its pupils. It provides an excellent education for children aged from 3 to 11 and places equal importance on academic and personal achievement. The school fosters a true love of learning in its pupils while offering them extensive facilities in which to thrive, including an all-weather pitch, outdoor learning areas and a Solardome. We were impressed by Wistaston Academy’s dedication and the staff were a pleasure to work with, making this project a breeze!

The school is based in Crewe in the country of Cheshire. Many people know the town for its railway history, but it is also home to Crewe Alexandra Football Club, the Crewe Lyceum Theatre and an exciting music scene. Local people like the staff and pupils at Wistaston Academy can enjoy all of this entertainment, plus quieter ventures in the traditionally Victorian Queen’s Park and a variety of shops and restaurants.

Why should schools consider installing an enclosed shelter?

Enclosed dining area canopy at St Gabriels High SchoolCanopies come in all shapes and sizes, and making them enclosed can open up options even more for schools. Here are some of the reasons why they should be considered.

  1. Multi-purpose – they can be put to work in all sorts of areas, from extra dining spaces to help schools struggling with growing intake numbers, to playground shelters that allow children to spend more time outside throughout the year. They can even be used for storing equipment, as outdoor classrooms uk or as innovative covered walkways.
  2. Versatility – many different models can be turned into enclosed canopies, including A&S Landscape’s colourful, standalone Maxima Tepee™ and the entire Motiva™ range. This means that the majority of our products can be adapted to feature sides and doors and suit different schools’ requirements.
  3. Customisability – staff can choose from a variety of shades for the steelwork and roofs to match their schools’ colours, and the printed polycarbonate option offers scenes like jungles and oceans, as well as the option to design your own.
