The St Lawrence Academy, Scunthorpe adds Canopies to Outdoor Area

The St Lawrence Academy is a small academy for 11-16 year old boys and girls of all abilities, where students are taught in an inclusive, caring environment. It was that environment which required some shelter and additional dining space and A&S Landscape were pleased to be asked for suggestions and recommendations for how to do this to best effect.

Project Specification

The Motiva Mono™ canopy at the entrance defines this space, frames the entrance beautifully and shelters visitors, students and pupils from all that the Great British weather can offer. It offers a lovely smart first impression to anyone coming to The St Lawrence Academy.

Overall the school has added some striking designs to their campus. We love them!

Why schools are using canopies to expand their provisions during a period of rising intake numbers

As we know, the school-age population has been increasing. The quantity of five to ten year old children in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) between 2010 and 2016.

The Department for Education has the responsibility to create the 420,000 new school places that are needed between 2016 and 2021 and there are lots of ways that this can be completed. New schools are being created, free schools are being funded and existing schools are receiving capital funding to maintain, improve and develop facilities. With budgets being overstretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build new classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a great deal of different uses.

Some applications of outdoor sheltered areas include:

• Alfresco dining areas

• All-weather sports pitches

• Outdoor classroom

• Cycle Storage

• Outdoor theatre
