What was the project brief?

The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School in Upminster, Greater London wanted a new dining shelter to expand its provision for its students at break times. It was important that the model had a sleek design that could protect those beneath it from the elements, as well as ensure people’s safety through post protectors. We had previously installed a canopy at this site and, as they were pleased with the product and their experience with our company, the staff there asked us to create a second model for them.

What was our canopy solution?

After looking at what we had on offer and considering the shelter they already had, The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School requested a Motiva Duo™. This works fantastically well as a dining canopy, and also as a playground shelter, covered walkway or outdoor classroom shelter. With an Opal roof and Jet Black steelwork, the model complemented the existing canopy – which was also a Motiva Duo™ with the same Opal roof but clean White steelwork instead – and looked modern and inviting. The 12000mm X 7000mm specifications provided room for seating underneath and a comfortable space for eating outdoors year-round, while the six post protector pads in bright shades made safety a priority.

What was the result of the new shelter?

The dining canopy has increased the school’s outdoor facilities significantly, and the now matching Motiva Duo™ products lend a wonderful, impressive atmosphere to the site. Students can enjoy eating with friends and relaxing between lessons in the fresh air, thanks to the shelters, and they don’t need to worry if it’s raining. The post protectors have put the staff’s minds at ease when it comes to safety precautions and they also love how these features give the second design extra flair. It was a pleasure to return to this institution and supply them with a canopy that shows how multiple structures can have a huge impact on a client’s daily life.

About the client

The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School is the highest performing comprehensive secondary school in London. It has a rich history tracing back to 1536 and its motto is ‘Love as Brethren’, which is reflected in its inclusive, dynamic culture and ambitions to produce confident, experienced young people. We thoroughly enjoyed creating another shelter for the dedicated team here and we were glad to hear that their learners started making good use of it in no time.

This customer is situated in Upminster in the London Borough of Havering, an area to the east of the city. More than half the borough is green-belt or park land, and its three country parks offer plenty of open space for nature watching, walking and sports. Upminster features the Upminster Windmill – a much-loved visitor attraction – and the historical Tithe Barn Museum, while the nearby town of Romford boasts a famous market that has operated for over 700 years.

Why are dining canopies so popular?

Dining shelters are a fantastic pick for academic institutions, businesses, organisations and more. Many people are now prioritising staff, personal and student wellbeing further than in previous years, and dining canopies allow them to deliver the positive impact that eating alfresco can have to their communities. The canopy structure offers a way to make the most of underutilised outdoor space while creating a modern dining area little affected by the unpredictable British weather. Plus, for schools struggling with rising pupil numbers and limited facilities, they provide a cost-effective alternative to new buildings or extensions.

The personalisation options are also a popular feature, as they can come in simpler designs to suit more limited budgets or include additions like doors, side panels, lighting and heating to work with different customers’ needs
