What was the project brief?

Lampton School in Hounslow, Greater London wanted a new covered walkway to run along the side of its building and offer protection to its community when they were moving around outside. It was therefore important that it was a lengthy structure that would work perfectly with the existing architecture and have a design to complement its modern feel. Also, the shelter needed to have a sturdy construction to always keep students dry in bad weather, and being able to use it in other ways too would be a bonus. The staff got in touch with us here at A&S Landscape and we were quick off the mark in creating their perfect custom canopy.

What was our covered walkway solution?

Following detailed talks with representatives from Lampton School, we installed a Motiva Linear™ in their grounds. This model is frequently chosen by academic institutions because of its robust design that doesn’t miss out on style or aesthetics, so it was an easy one for us to recommend from our range of shelters. We were able to build it to measurements of 12410mm X 3000mm – an extensive length well-suited to a covered walkway and shielding those beneath it from unpredictable weather. Plus, an Opal roof and Signal Grey steelwork finished off the classy look for an institution looking to the future.

What was the result of the new shelter?

Everyone at Lampton School loves the canopy and how it has changed their daily lives for the better. Now, walking outdoors between lessons or at break time is a more comfortable experience in the wind and rain, thanks to the shelter reaching along the edge of the building. It could also have other uses, such as a playground canopy under which students could chat with friends at lunchtime and get some much-deserved fresh air. The light, airy design is a welcome addition to the feel of the grounds, and the team at the school was impressed with how well we were able to adapt our model to their architecture and needs. It was a pleasure to help our client make the most of their outdoor space in a personalised way with one of our covered walkway systems.

About the client

Lampton School is an 11-18 comprehensive with a large sixth form and past students have gone on to study at Russell Group universities. It works with other institutions as the London West Alliance SCITT to provide outstanding initial teacher training, and says on its website that it is ‘dedicated to providing exceptional learning experiences where there are no limits to achievement’. This was clear to us while supplying the school’s canopy and we wish them and their learners a bright future.

Lampton School is based in Hounslow in Greater London, a bustling town full of eateries that feature global-wide cuisines. Those interested in culture can enjoy performances at The Arts Centre Hounslow or Bell Square, while there are opportunities to experience green spaces at attractions like Hounslow Heath. This is definitely an area where young people like those attending Lampton School can develop their interests and become well-rounded individuals.

What do I need to consider when buying a covered walkway?

A shelter is a fantastic investment but it’s essential that every client gets what they need out of one. Clear communication about requirements is something to prioritise so a company can understand how to provide the right product, and many will visit a site to evaluate its accessibility and more to inform their plans.

Design is key too because there are many options to choose from, such as size to accommodate different amounts of students or staff or to cover a large area. It’s good to have an idea of what canopy style might suit your facility best – such as a straight or curved roof, or bright or unobtrusive colours for roofs and steelwork. What’s more, shelters should be placed in areas where a community can get fantastic use out of them when spending time outside, so clients should consider their location carefully.
