What was the project brief?

St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School in Grays, Essex was looking for an outdoor shelter of many purposes that could help them with all-weather outdoor play, learning and other activities. They also thought it would be useful for keeping pupils and staff dry when walking outside the school, such as when moving between classrooms or heading back in after lunchtime. The staff at the institution – which has the motto ‘we learn, achieve and love following Jesus’ – wanted an extensive model that could run along the length of the building, offer excellent coverage in rain, wind and sun, and be safe for young children to play beneath. Our team was pleased to be contacted and we set our sights on designing their perfect shelter.

What was our canopy solution?

We talked through our client’s preferences and how our products could work with their facilities, and they settled on our Motiva Linear™ for their outdoor canopy. Thanks to it being snow-safe and wind-safe, it can stand up against all sorts of bad weather and make spending time outside possible throughout the seasons. We designed the structure with 22440mm X 4000mm measurements so it could provide immediate coverage by the side of the school building in all weathers, and seven post protector pads to reduce the risk of accidents when pupils were having fun outside under the shelter. What’s more, an Opal roof and Gentian Blue steelwork made for a stylish outdoor canopy that could be used for play, dining, lessons and more outside.

What was the result of the shelter?

The canopy has been a hit with this customer; wet weather is no longer a problem when walking beside the building after lunch or between lessons. The children can enjoy their breaks outdoors beneath it in a safe, covered space untouched by the elements, and opportunities have even been opened up for learning and eating outside too. Also, the staff were impressed by our ability to adapt the outdoor shelter to their facilities with custom specifications. Working with them to find the right solution and product was a real pleasure.
