What was the project brief?

St Mary’s and St John’s CE School in Hendon, Greater London was searching for a large dining shelter that could ease pressure on its indoor facilities and give students more options when choosing where to spend break times. The staff wanted a model with a classic and unobtrusive look, plus a robust design that could hold up in all kinds of bad weather. They came across A&S Landscape and decided to approach us to install the canopy, because they liked our products and they fit into their budget.

What was our dining canopy solution?

We talked through and narrowed down the options with St Mary’s and St John’s CE School, and they then chose the Motiva Duo™ for their dining shelter. This model was particularly appealing to them because it is ideal for outdoor dining areas and is an effective, standalone structure that looks fantastic in any space. The team picked out Slate Grey steelwork and an Opal roof – which made for a contemporary feel that blended in with the architecture of the school building – as well as six large post pads to provide extra safety options. Also, specifications of 10000mm X 8000mm offered lots of space for students to eat and catch up with friends outdoors, and the durable materials of the Motiva Duo™ were sure to protect them from the elements whether it was rainy or windy.

What was the result of the shelter?

The dining canopy has been a fantastic addition to St Mary’s and St John’s CE School. Students now have more choice when considering where to hang out with friends or eat at break times and lunchtimes, and queues in the indoor facilities have been significantly reduced! The modern colours work well with the existing surroundings at the school and the structure could even double up as an outdoor classroom shelter. A&S Landscape was pleased that its product has been so useful to everyone at St Mary’s and St John’s CE School and would love to supply them with another canopy in the future, should they have need of one.

How can canopies help schools to meet the needs of a growing population?

Many schools struggle with increasing numbers of students; the Department for Education has had to create over 400,000 new places in the five years up to 2021. In order to adapt to this influx of children, institutions can use canopies to make the most of their outdoor spaces, without breaking their budgets. A dining shelter can reduce overcrowding in dining halls, while a waterproof sail shade can make for a fantastic, additional outdoor learning or play area that can also keep students cool in summer sun or dry in autumn rain. What’s more, a Covered Multi Use Games Area can allow more children to access and enjoy a range of sports.
