What was the project brief?

straight roof shelter st peters primary schoolSt Peter’s RC Primary School in Cardiff had the idea to install two outdoor shelters to create somewhere for pupils to safely play outdoors in all weathers, which could even be used as outdoor classrooms. They wanted them to match the fun red, white and blue colour scheme of some of their architecture to heighten the cheerful atmosphere, as well as offer excellent coverage so playtime wasn’t restricted by wind or rain. It was also essential that the canopies came with post protector pads to reduce the chance of accidents. The staff contacted A&S Landscape and we were thrilled to take on this project.

What was our outdoor canopy solution?

Following talks about the various ways to move forward, St Peter’s RC Primary School asked us to add two Motiva Linear™ shelters to its grounds. This model is versatile and can be utilised in many different ways, thanks to its clever design and monopitch roof. We built one canopy to measure 18000mm X 3000mm and the other to measure 10000mm X 6000mm – this offered plenty of room for multiple children to enjoy playtime outside while being shielded from the elements. Plus, 12 post protector pads ensured that they’d stay safe in the areas, no matter what activities they were doing. The team at the school chose White steelwork and Opal roofs which worked nicely with the red, white and blue exterior colour scheme too.

What was the result of the shelters?

The pair of outdoor canopies has been a hit at St Peter’s RC Primary School; many pupils have loved saying goodbye to wet playtimes and now benefit from getting fresh air during breaks and having fun in ways they simply can’t indoors, even if it’s raining. The asymmetric straight roofs look fabulous and make quick work of sheltering anyone beneath them, and the coordinated designs make a great impression on visitors and keep up morale. Either model could also make an effective outdoor classroom shelter to diversify the children’s learning experiences. It’s safe to say that they will be a real asset to the school for years to come.

About the client

St Peter’s RC Primary School is a thriving, multicultural institution that educates around 500 pupils aged from 3 to 11. It has strong links with St Peter’s Parish as it is a Catholic school, and its mission is ‘to create an environment within our school community that truly reflects the values that are expressed in the Gospels’. We were impressed with the care that the staff showed the children and would happily work with them again in the future.

This institution is situated in Cardiff, the Welsh capital. Visitors and residents like the pupils at St Peter’s RC Primary School are spoilt for choice with things to do in the city. From attractions like Cardiff Castle and the National Museum Cardiff to the experiences to be had at Cardiff International White Water and the Wales Millennium Centre, everyone’s interests are catered for. This is definitely an exciting place to live and spend time.

What other A&S Landscape models are popular with schools?

The Motiva Linear™ isn’t the only product from our canopy range that schools love. Another option that staff often request is the Motiva Duo™, our duopitch symmetric curved roof variant where both sides are at the same height. This makes it a great choice for standalone structures like outdoor dining areas. Also, our Motiva Entro™ is popular with schools in need of an entrance shelter, as it presents many opportunities for customisation and protects visitors from the unpredictable British weather on their arrival.

A third model that we frequently find schools ordering is our Maxima StarSail™, a beautiful combination of a shade sail and umbrella design. It’s one of our innovative tensile fabric canopies – perfect for offering shelter from rain and sun and able to create everything from a playground canopy to a covered relaxation space.
