Shade Sails at Ysgol Penygloddfa

It’s always fun to add some vibrant design to a school, and we think we did it with these outdoor fabric shade sails in Newtown, Powys.

Project Specification

  • Product: Maxima Sail™
  • Size: 5000mm x 5000mm
  • Steelwork:
    • Ultramarine Blue - RAL NO. 5002

  • Fabric:
    • Yellow

    • Green

    • Blue - RAL 5003

We worked with Ysgol Penygloddfa to install three Maxima Sails, each 5000mm x 5000mm with smart Blue (RAL5002) posts and colourful fabric sails in Yellow, Green and Blue. The addition of red post pads meant that the entire area did more than just provide shade on a sunny day, it provided a talking point too.

Parents just loved the fact their children were getting protection from the sun and the vibrant and whimsical design added some playfulness to the area.

“All aspects of work from initial contact, through planning stages and discussions, fitting of posts and then sails, were first class and very professional at each and every stage. The sails not only serve their function by providing shade in areas where required, but they also enhance the areas they serve and also the school. There have been many positive comments from parents regarding our thought in providing shade for their children, our pupils. An excellent addition to our school.”

The benefits and importance on outdoor play on children

Health is negatively affected by not getting sufficient exercise, resulting in increasing rates of obesity in children and adolescents. Children are not playing outside as much as they have done historically, restricting their contact with sunlight and thus the creation of Vitamin D which helps to fight infection and keeps skin healthy. Sunlight also helps to manage the production of melatonin which regulates sleep. Smartphones emit damaging blue light, which can cause headaches and eye strain. Blue light in the evenings can even restrict the development of melatonin, which in turn can make falling asleep very tough for some children.

We’re delighted we could make such a difference to this outstanding school. We’ve also worked many other schools in Wales, including Ysgol Gynradd Llaneltydd. Read more about similar projects on our blog.
