The rising issue of childhood obesity and what we can do to help children at home and in school

Childhood obesity is arguably at its most critical and one of the more worrying issues we face globally. As attested by the World Health Organisation (WHO), it’s one of the most alarming public health challenges of the 21st century. This global epidemic is hitting low and middle-income countries, more significantly in urban environments. Globally in 2016, the amount of overweight children under the age of five was 41 million. Additionally, overweight and obese children have a tendency to stay obese into adulthood and are vulnerable to developing diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments while still young.

Childhood obesity and related health issues, such as diabetes are broadly avoidable. On these grounds, the WHO prioritises the prevention of these conditions in youth, particularly because bad dietary habits and a inactive lifestyle are among the main causes of noncommunicable diseases. These conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, substantially lead to the global burden of disease, death and disability.
