What was the project brief?

Lordship Lane Primary School in London wanted a playground shelter so its pupils could let off steam and have fun in the fresh air, year-round. The ideal model would be multicoloured and immediately brighten up the space, reflecting the institution’s dedication to wellbeing and providing a safe, positive environment for its learners. The staff thought it should be a long structure, able to offer protection from the elements for lots of pupils enjoying different activities, and able to stretch along the edge of their outdoor space in an economical way. When they got in touch with us, we were more than happy to advise them on the best way to bring their ideas and needs together.

What was our playground canopy solution?

Following a thorough consultation, we manufactured a 19500mm X 3600mm Motiva Linear™ for Lordship Lane Primary School. This versatile monopitch canopy can be used for anything from outdoor dining to covered walkway systems, and it also makes for a great playground shelter. We supplied it with Anthracite Grey steelwork and a multicoloured roof featuring a rainbow of polycarbonate sheets, which made for a brilliant and vibrant atmosphere – ideal for creative, social and active play. The design would easily encourage the children to get outdoors, even in the rain. What’s more, the elongated shape of the custom canopy meant that there was room for many classmates to fit underneath it at the same time.

What was the result of the shelter?

Staff and pupils alike at Lordship Lane Primary School think the world of their new playground canopy. Its colourful roof is a focal point of positivity in the grounds, thanks to its fun array of colours and the way it enables the children to spend valuable time outdoors in all sorts of weather. They can play games, run around or talk with friends beneath the shelter, and have important experiences in a different environment to the classroom – even on rainy days. Plus, how it stands at the side of the outdoor space has helped it to become a natural and efficient part of the architecture. It was wonderful to see the final results of our project and how it helped our client solve a problem in a way that worked with their specific needs.

What sectors are multicoloured canopies useful for?

Colourful shelters can benefit any type of organisation or business, but they are particularly popular with schools. They are well-suited to playgrounds and creating covered outdoor spaces where children can enjoy break times, thanks to their fun combination of shades. They can also be great features at healthcare facilities – think a rainbow-themed hospital entrance or a bright seating canopy – as they can bring welcome moments of relaxation or a smile to people’s faces during difficult times. Sports organisations can use them at their sites and choose from our polycarbonate roofing options to find a design that represents their carefully chosen brand colours or team, while shielding visitors. What’s more, these shelters can be a hit at parks and other outdoor areas as they can help children exercise and let off steam throughout the year, while enhancing the space.
