What was the project brief?

Gordonstoun School in Elgin, Moray needed a shade sail to act as a multi-purpose space where students could learn, relax with friends and even play games outdoors in all seasons. The institution is one of the leading full boarding schools in the UK, set in a 200 acre woodland campus near the Scottish Highlands, and has recently expanded its facilities to include a Sports Centre and Performing Arts department. Adding covered facilities outdoors was therefore a natural next step and the team there wanted their shelter to be just as modern and impressive, as well as useful for their learners. They got in touch with us at A&S Landscape and our experts were quick off the mark to help.

What was our shade sail solution?

We took all our client’s needs and preferences into consideration when advising them on how to proceed with their project. They then asked us to install one of our Maxima Sail™ canopies because its applications for outdoor classrooms, dining and social areas made a great impression on them. We supplied this particular model with specifications of 6000mm X 6000mm on a total of four uprights to create a comfortable amount of room for students to congregate beneath the shelter at once and not be bothered by the weather. What’s more, a Tennis Green roof and Basalt Grey steelwork gave it a contemporary feel that complemented the rest of the site that the team had taken so much care with.

What was the result of the shelter?

Our customer was thrilled with the shade sail; it looks right at home in their grounds and lends both a modern style and practicality to the new covered outdoor area. Students can use it to spend time with friends during any breaks while enjoying some well-earned fresh air, or it could even be used as an outdoor classroom or dining space. The measurements are perfect for the school’s needs too and they have allowed them to make the most of the space available and accommodate learners without the structure becoming overly conspicuous. It was wonderful to add this successful project to our portfolio of work with academic institutions by helping this school build on its facilities.
