When additional cycle storage was required several sites were considered and A&S Landscape was happy to assist in discussing feasibility and cost options. Once a site was chosen we set about designing possibly the most robust cycle store ever! Heavy galvanised section, unbreakable polycarbonate roof and sides and strong mesh front and gate all add up to make this a very secure store. No sooner was it built than its popularity demanded an extension! The modular design of the system allowed a straightforward extension to accommodate an additional 20 cycles.

What are the barriers preventing children from cycling to school and why we should be working to removing these obstacles?

With estimations that by 2050 70% of girls and 55% of boys will be overweight or obese, there has never been a more key time to cycle to school. Still, more people than ever are driving their children to school. A Sustrans survey showed that while 12% of parents were driven to school when they were young, now 35% of children are driven to school, so what has happened?

Parents named fears over road safety as one of the barriers to cycling to school, so schemes like ‘Bikeability’ where pupils learn the fundamentals of road safety are a vital step in preparing pupils for the cycle to school. Perfecting the route at the weekends when the roads are likely to be quieter is also good preparation.

“We are extremely impressed with the quality and design of the two cycle shelters that A&S Landscape installed. A&S Landscape not only provided a competitive quotation for our original specification but also worked with us to improve the designs and ensure we got the best value within our budget. We really appreciated their flexible approach – amending the specification to best suit our requirements and scheduling the works to fit in with our fund-raising efforts and school breaks. The construction team were professional and the polycarbonate appears superior to that used previously at the school. We look forward to working with A&S Landscape on similar projects in the future.”

A&S Landscape was pleased to carry out the whole project including the concrete base works, removing the requirement for the school to engage multiple contractors. We also installed a large cycle shelter at Barton Court Grammar School in Kent.
