What was the project brief?

Shade Sail covering picnic tables.Border Biscuits in Lanark wanted a shade sail so they could put together a covered outdoor seating area for their office staff. It needed to be attractive and cheerful to create a relaxing, positive area for people to take a break socialising or eating, and be able to stand up as a rain and sun shade in the open area outside. This would help raise morale and provide an essential facility for daily use. The team contacted us here at A&S Landscape and we were thrilled to take on this challenge.

What was our shade sail solution?

Border Biscuits came to us with their ideas, and we formulated a plan to incorporate them and provide the company with a shelter that met and exceeded their expectations. We installed a Maxima Sail™ in their grounds – as they were looking for something fun and modern, this eye-catching design with lots of customisation options was a natural choice. We used a Lemon roof and Squirrel Grey steelwork to bring a pop of colour to the outdoor space so staff would always want to enjoy breaks there, and the materials were strong enough that the weather wouldn’t restrict their ability to do this. What’s more, 5000mm x 5000mm measurements were large enough to fit and shelter several benches beneath the canopy.

What was the result of the shelter?

Everyone at Border Biscuits really likes the new shade sail that we manufactured and added to their site. It has created the perfect place for staff to sit outside in all weathers and have a snack or chat with their colleagues. The bright yellow design has made the area look more cheerful, and this new opportunity will give people’s wellbeing a great boost by allowing them to take in more fresh air during their working days. It gave us great pleasure to add this shelter to our collection of successful commercial projects.

About the client

Border Biscuits has been perfecting biscuit recipes to facilitate special moments for people since 1984. They are proud to be both a family business and Scotland’s number 1 premium biscuit brand, known for everything from their Dark Chocolate Gingers to their Lemon Drizzle Melts. We thoroughly enjoyed designing a canopy for them and were inspired by their dedication to their craft and customers.

Border Biscuits is situated in Lanark, a historic market town and Royal Burgh in Scotland. It is home to one of the busiest agricultural markets in the country and sits on the national William Wallace trail; it is rumoured to be where he got married. Visitors can also enjoy the nearby World Heritage Site of New Lanark, the Falls of Clyde Wildlife reserve, and the Lanark, Tinto and Covington Cycle Route.

What other kinds of canopy can commercial sites benefit from?

Walkway canopy at Wareham Recycling CentreA waterproof sail shade isn’t the only type of shelter that can be incredibly useful for businesses across the country. Covered walkway systems can offer a way to unite facilities with multiple buildings and keep people moving between them dry in the rain. Plus, entrance shelters can spruce up the way in to shops or offices and make them more pleasant for both staff and customers, as well as signpost the quickest route inside to visitors. With many commercial sites having large numbers of workers, dining canopies can also help people to refresh themselves outside on their breaks throughout the year.
