What was the project brief?

Tickhill Road Hospital in Doncaster was in need of a shade sail model to create a relaxing atmosphere in its outdoor space. The staff there wanted it to be practical and offer relief from the hot summer sun and wintery rain, while also making the grounds look more aesthetically interesting for patients or visitors taking a break in the fresh air. They thought it should come in a single colour for a classic look. We were delighted when Tickhill Road Hospital approached us to take on this canopy project.

What was our canopy solution?

Following talks about the different kinds of products available and the benefits they could each bring, our client’s team asked us to install a Maxima Sail™ shelter on their site. Thanks to its economical and versatile design, this model can protect people relaxing beneath it from the elements without having too much of an impact on an outdoor area. Tickhill Road Hospital requested a Maxima Sail™ comprising two shade sails for extended coverage, in simple White to match its White steelwork. The posts were completed with a Dura-coat™ finish, so they will stay looking bright for many years to come. Avoiding a brash colourful look was a good choice as it wouldn’t have suited the environment, but the sleek custom canopy aligned well with the idea of encouraging calmness and interest.

What was the result of the new shade sail?

Everyone at Tickhill Road Hospital thinks highly of their A&S Landscape shelter; after it was installed, it instantly made the space outside look more inviting with its eye-catching pair of shade sails. People at the facility can now enjoy getting some fresh air all year round, giving them a well-being boost and what may be a welcome break during a shift, hospital stay or visit to loved ones. What’s more, the all-White colour complements the feel of the site. It was truly satisfying for us to see one of our tensile fabric canopies in situ, having such a positive impact on daily life at the hospital.

About the client

How can shelters make life more practical at healthcare sites?

Healthcare facilities are often complex places where many people have to work in different fields, simultaneously and under pressure. This means that they need to be well laid-out and functional, so everyone can do their jobs as best as they can. Canopies can help to make these environments work even better.

For example, ambulance shelters can keep patients dry when they’re being transferred to and from a vehicle and hospital building, so staff can focus on their needs and not be distracted by the weather, and neither feels the effects of it. Dining canopies can provide somewhere for workers and visitors to eat, away from the medical and emotional care at a care home, and also extend their available space which may be overcrowded. What’s more, covered walkway systems can keep the rain and wind out when people are moving around outside a large site, while also helping them find their way to different locations.

Whether you represent a small health centre, a walk-in clinic or a community hospital, it’s clear that healthcare facilities can hugely benefit from installing shelters and they can make life a little easier there.
