What was the project brief?

St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School, located on Bridge Road in Bury, is a faith-based school with a motto of ‘Learn, love believe’Dining shelter visual we created for St Gabriel's RC High School. It’s certainly a school with family roots, with some staff choosing to send their own children to the school, and some of the staff have even been pupils there themselves!

Like so many other high schools up and down the country, St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School is a busy place with pupils aged 11 to 16 years. With in excess of 1,000 pupils attending school each day, space can sometimes be tight, especially at lunch break. But with a little creative thinking and some expert help, there are ways to address this issue.

What was our custom canopy solution?

Taking account of the size of the school and the plot available for development, our expert design team drew up plans for a Motiva Linear™ free standing canopy. St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School loved the design and commissioned an installation measuring an impressive 26 metres by 12 metres. The Motiva Linear™ design comes with a straight roof feature, and is available in just about any dimensions with appropriate design features built in. It’s a great looking canopy cover with a range of uses from covered walkways, as an entrance or door canopy, as well as the basis for a dining area canopy too.

Rather than simply install an overhead shelter, St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School wanted to explore additional design features. This enabled them to take the project to a whole new level. By adding side panels and doors, the canopy cover essentially became a sheltered outdoor room, and an all-weather option for pupils to use at break and lunchtimes.

What was the result of their new custom canopy?

Not only do A&S Landscape canopies come with a whole host of technical design features, but there are a choice of steelwork and roof material colours too. St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School opted for Slate Grey (RAL 7015) steelwork and Opal polycarbonate roofing. This meant that the end result was a sleek and impressive looking outdoor shelter solution, perfect for meeting the needs of hungry pupils looking for space to dine during the course of the school day.

Their brand-new custom canopy is a weatherproof alternative to the inside dining facilities, and a great way to encourage St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School pupils into the great outdoors for fresh air at break times.

About the client

The last 12 months have seen a period of transformation for St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School. Their online 2020 Open Day was delivered via YouTube due to COVID-19 restrictions, and it’s a great to watch to hear all about the new initiatives that have been introduced since Headteacher, Lisa Corrigan, took over. Lisa tells viewers all about the brand-new internal dining room and dining area canopy, and it’s great to see their new Motiva Linear™ canopy cover getting an appearance in the video too!

The enrichment opportunities at St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School are extensive too. Not only is there a focus on doing as well as possible academically, but pupils are encouraged to expand their skills and experience in other ways. This includes through learning British Sign Language (BSL). BSL is a great way to learn a skill that breaks down barriers and teaches pupils about the importance of inclusivity. With more activities besides learning BSL, there are opportunities for all to learn and grow at St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School.

Why invest in a custom canopy?

Perhaps your school doesn’t have the same need for an outdoor dining area canopy as St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic High School. But do you know the extent to which a custom canopy can enhance any busy high school site? Here are just a few of the canopy types to choose from:

Why are canopies perfect for high school sites?

A custom canopy can be a great way to bring back to life underused areas of your high school campus. With a multitude of different uses, they can be the answer to a wide range of challenges for headteachers and schools with tight budgets and growing pupil numbers. But they don’t just have a practical use. They help to generate good, solid sociable spaces within which students can enjoy being outside, as well as working as outdoor classroom buildings for those schools that want to foster outdoor learning. Giving students a choice of options, and creating attractive spaces for them to use, will mean that a new shelter solution can be a win-win solution for the whole school community.
